Steps to reproduce:

I had just updated to 91.3.1 (32-bit) yesterday. An email came in this morning with black background. I replied to it. Now all composition is white text, black background. Would that reset my whole system?

Actual results:

Preferences showed composition was still set to black text, white background. Reset to "default", which was black on black. Then changed background to white with black text. Nothing changed. Still white text on black background

Expected results:

I don't know, but t never should've reset to black background after update and replying to an email this morning with black background.

HELP! THanks.

P.S. In the preview, it's still black text, white background. Open the draft and it reverses. Can seem to fix it.

I have the same issue. with Mac ver. 11.4 big sur.

Windows 10 on desktop-pc x86_64
Thunderbird 91.3.2 (German)

Comparable problem after update to 91.3.2.
In the text-window to send email, now white text and black background. (I have not received any email with black background).

  • Thunderbird does not respond to attempts to change the colors. It is fixed to white text and black background.
  • Also in "bug fix mode" without any add-on
  • reinstalled - same issue

Now I go back to 91.3.0 same issue

Yep, getting reverse contrast email didn't cause the issue. It just revealed the T-bird bug. I had to work around it by going into Windows Settings, Personalization, Colors, and changing to a general light color scheme affecting windows & applications. Apparently some windows versions have a section just for apps to avoid changing everything.

I noticed long ago the color-change buttons in composition are utterly useless and non-functional. Beyond that, very lame-limited formatting options while writing or responding.

Thanks a lot,
with the setting in Windows (default app-mode to light) the text is now black and the text background is white.
Just as it was before the T-bird update.

Unfortunately, this is only a provisional solution, but the bug that the colors are not adjustable in Thunderbird, still exists and should be fixed.

So, you were using Thunderbird with the built-in System theme in Add-ons and Themes, and a Windows Dark theme?

Now you switched to the Light default Windows theme, with the Thunderbird System Theme, and everything is the way you expected.

You do have the option of using the Thunderbird Light theme with the Windows Dark theme.

I don't know if windows was dark theme. I didn't have all that memorized, and I didn't expect a T-bird bug to force me to change things in Window.

Before I changed windows, I tried the T-bird Light them "option". No change. Didn't work. Just like the T-bird composition text color buttons that don't work.

T-bird needs to fix the bug.

Yep. And the "bug" that colors are not adjustable has been there since I installed T-bird well over a year ago.

I have now solved that for myself.

  1. The Windows app color is dark again (I prefer)
  2. In T-bird, set "Never" under color.
Two days ago that wasn't a solution, now it works. It may be due to a small Windows update that was carried out this morning.
