Can you share a screen shot of your SMTP settings? Especially the "Authentication method" setting.

This does not sound like a bug in Thunderbird code, but a configuration question that should go to a support forum instead.

Can you provide some debug logs?
- open Config Editor from the Settings page, set
mailnews.smtp.logleveltoAll - open DevTools, clear any existing logs in the Console tab
- send a mail

Thanks, notice there is no AUTH line after EHLO, I guess there is some changes on the gmx side. Please try changing Connection Security to SSL or STARTTLS.
Use plain text + unencrypted is bad practice, I was surprised some gmx docs suggested that.

Great! it solved the issue with 'SSL' + 'normal password'.
Many thanks for help!
