Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:98.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/98.0

Steps to reproduce:

Using PoP on Windows 10 (64).

Open Thunderbird to view InBox or another folder. Select message. Delete.

Actual results:

Message list blanks until another folder is opened. Upon return to Inbox (or other folder) then previous messages are restored and selected message is in fact deleted.
This may reoccur again on another folder or may work correctly. No obvious pattern found.

Expected results:

Message list should persist except for deleted message being moved to trash.

We're almost on beta version 100 now, not 97.
Is it better on a newer version?

Flags: needinfo?(df86)

Sorry I'm only running released versions not beta. It still exists in Thunderbird 91.7.0 (64-bit)

91.8.0 should be offered to you today. Not likely to be fixed by it but can you test again with that version?

will do

You want me to edit the bug to reflect that this is against 91.x instead of 97?

Thanks. I'm not seeing anything in the relnotes that's jumping out at me: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/91.8.0/releasenotes/

Installed Thunderbird 91.8.0 (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro 10.0.19044 Build 19044. Tried multiple times to repeat problem in InBox and other folders. Can not duplicate. It's fixed!

Thanks for the reply Dave.

Version: Thunderbird 97 → Thunderbird 91

Sadly this bug is back in 91.8 64bit. After about three days of normal Thunderbird use with no occurrence, the same symptoms are back where the current folder window blanks on a bug delete until you change folders and return. It is interesting that the update to the new version appeared to stop the behavior for a while. Seems like a persistent queue somewhere is overflowing!

Once in a while, I find TB to completely "white screen" for me but I am certain it's because I am on an ancient laptop with ancient drivers (that cannot be updated). Something akin to a screen draw/re-draw issue. I often have to move my mouse around the TB "white screen" to make things visible again or invoke a restore down / restore up action to make things come back to normal.

I don't know that it's related but are you on old hardware or old GPU drivers as well?

My configuration is certainly a possibility. My hardware is a getting old but I don't think ancient :-) ...all drivers are current although Windows 11 isn't supported.

I don't see redraw type bad behavior anywhere else and in Thunderbird mouse moving or changing focus doesn't fix the problem.

i7-4600U is pretty long in the tooth as it's from 2013. The latest official drivers for your GPU (HD4400) direct from Intel are dated 2-5-2021 / 15.40.48.5171. The 20.19.15.5063 drivers from comment 11 appear to be from Dell's own site and are dated from 2019. It's up to you but you could always give them a shot to eliminate the possibility of it being a driver bug. They're here: https://tinyurl.com/15-40-48-5171

2013 seems like just yesterday! Unfortunately Intel and Dell are in lockstep. When I just tried to update to the latest Intel drivers, their app reports that the "manufacturer hasn't verified the driver for this device" and then it exits! Dell is likely not worrying about updates because of the age. Thanks for the driver idea though.

I'll see if I can triage more when this blanking happens again. Very odd that it isn't consistent. I can open TB and delete mail with no problems sometimes and then it will appear. Other times it appears on the first delete after launch and then not again.

Well, thanks for giving it a try. 91.9.0 should be out around May 3rd I think. Maybe it'll help.

Also check tools > error console when it happens.
Do you have automatic compact enabled? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders

Yes I have automatic compact turned on. Set to compact whenever >1MB will be saved.
I just enabled Ask First so I can see if that is or isn't related to the blanking.

I'll check the console log next time it happens and report on contents.

Hmm..Seems Compaction may be a trigger! Today I opened TB in the Inbox. I was reading a message but had not selected anything to delete. The Compaction alert popped up to compact the Sent folder. When I acknowledged OK to Compact Sent the Inbox blanked.

Here's some info from the Error Console at the time of the event....
