We received a report from Netflix about this green line issue. They told us they can reproduce this on both Windows and MacOS, but I was only able to reproduce this issue on my Windows 10.
STR.
- go to setting, uncheck the box for
Use recommended performance settings
andUse hardware acceleration when available
. - restart Firefox
- go to https://www.netflix.com/title/80057281?videoProfiles=av1-main-L30-dash-cbcs-prk
- wait until video starts playing (click somewhere on the page)
Expected.
5. No green lines
Actual.
5. Showing some green lines on the video, which could also be found on other videos.
Unchecking the box Use hardware acceleration when available
would turn off the pref layers.acceleration.disabled
, which turns off the hw composition.
Note, there are some extra information they provided.
- issue does not reproduce with other codecs (only on av1)
- issue does not reproduce on a standalone page with just video element, so maybe something related to complex layout/layers/css?
- issue does not reproduce with hardware acceleration enabled (this means the hw composition)
- when window is resized - the line stays in the same absolute place on the screen but because video size adapts - the line moves relatively to the video. I assume this proves that this is not an issue with the av1 codec itself.
- issue does not reproduce in other browsers (tested in Chrome)

Glenn, can you provide any insights here?

Could they provide the contents of their about:support
both with composition (no bug) and without composition (bug) so we can be sure what paths Firefox is running?
I wonder if there are some kind of alignment differences when using AV1 compared to other codecs? Perhaps see if Lee or the media team have any ideas on what differences might exist here?

OK, so that confirms that the bug is occurring when running SWGL - perhaps we have an alignment / stride issue handling textures depending on the external texture source / compositing path we choose for them Lee?
