I have "Compact all folders when it will save over 50 MB in total" checked, and "Ask every time before compacting" not checked.

I just manually compacted my folders and when it was done it said that it had saved 1.4GB (that's not a typo) of disk space.

I am not sure I've ever seen it automatically compact folders.

In short, the automatic folder compacting does not appear to be working.

the space saving issue is Bug 1260698 - Compact folders - shows wrong estimated and compacted size. Compacts too often. totalExpungedBytes number is wrong.

Regarding compact not working - there is recent progress on one aspect in Bug 1776727 - compact fails with "just mark it as deleted" in 102RC1 (IMAP)

I would suggest trying version 102 in about 3 weeks, and if you are still having an issue please comment in this bug report.
