User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:99.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/99.0

Steps to reproduce:

Drag image from web page to Apple Messages, hit send.

Actual results:

If the user is on an Apple device (iMessage) normal behavior.
If the user is SMS, a progress bar results, and the image fails to send.

Expected results:

Image should have sent regardless of iMessage/SMS status.

tested with multiple other browsers, all work as expected, not Firefox.

If I understand correctly, to be able to reproduce, I would need to have an iPhone and have the same Apple ID signed in on both Mac and iPhone, which is unfortunately not the phone I'm using. However, the difference I have seen is that when I drag&drop an image to Mac Messages App from a website on Chrome or Safari, a preview image will be displayed. When I drag&drop from Firefox, there is only the url link to that image displayed in the Messages App. Could this be the cause?

I didn't see this, a preview image is displayed on Message App when I drag&drop from Firefox (I tried png and jpg), which page are you using as image source?

The search results I got from google image search. For example, I searched "spring". Then I drag&drop an image from the result list. Or when I clicked into the original page for that image, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_(season) , drag&drop the image on the top-right corner. No preview image displayed when I was using Firefox.

After reading your comment, I tried on Flickr. Only a url link was displayed on messages when I drag&drop an image from the search result list on Safari as well. But still I haven't been able to see a preview image when I used Firefox for drag&drop.

Which pages were you testing with?

I mostly did the same steps as yours (except I used different keyword for google seach), but not happen on my side.
My Mac OS version is still 11.2.3 (Message version is 14.0). Maybe the difference is caused by OS/App version is different?
I will try again after upgrading to latest version.

I am still not able to reproduce this after upgrading to Mac OS 12.4, see https://youtu.be/Tczbb70jK0s.

Hsin-Yi, Merrick: with which iMessage version does the issue occur for you?

Hsin-Yi, Merrick: with which iMessage version does the issue occur for you?

Sorry that this fell out of my attention radar.
the iMessages version was 14.0.

Current. I have a Mac Studio running 12.4.

Pasting/dragging images from Safari and Brave works just fine, haven't tested Chrome because I don't want to even install it to be honest, not a fan.

Once dragged from Firefox, the images won't send even if dragged to desktop, or on my phone (latest iOS). Ie: drag image from firefox to Messages to sent to an Apple device. Works fine, they get it. Open phone, go to that message, and copy and paste that same image to non-Apple recipient... it still fails.

Is there some export metadata added or something?

So far, everything works well with Firefox.

For this last step, it looks Firefox isn't involved, right? I doubt if there's anything we can do on Firefox side.

Is there some export metadata added or something?

Adding the Qa-not-actionable tag for now but we can try to reproduce this issue on our end as well when we get our hands on a Mac Studio 12.4.

QA Whiteboard: [qa-not-actionable]

Might be a similar issue as bug 1802163 where we don't write image data into drag pasteboard.
