User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/102.0.5005.63 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Upgraded to 102 beta with overwrite.
Displayed message in inbox.
From menu bar clicked message, move to, hovered over recent. Thunderbird hung.
Clicked X, told Windows to close app.
Reopened Thunderbird.
Displayed same message.
From menu bar clicked message, move to, hovered over recent. Thunderbird hung.
Repeated again.
Reopened Thunderbird.
Displayed same message.
From menu bar clicked message, move to, selected a destination folder, move successful.
Displayed different message.
From menu bar clicked message, move to, hovered over recent. Thunderbird hung.

Actual results:

Thunderbird hangs and requires Windows to force close the app.

Expected results:

The "recent" list should have populated instead of Thunderbird hanging.

On Mac, I consistently have a slight delay. But never hung.

I want to report Thunderbird has ceased hanging when doing the click-path stated above. By accident I hovered over "recent" so it would populate and produce a list. Thunderbird seemed to hang, but as I was about to kill the application the list populated and worked OK. After that I've hovered over recent several times without issue. I did no app or configuration changes.

This looks like bug 1773822. The issue is that panacea isn't migrated properly, so the new folderCache.json store doesn't contain the "recent attribute". Therefore it's retrieved from the folder databases leaving way too many open.

With 102 beta there is always a long delay to populate the recent list. It hasn't locked up again.

Depends on: 1773822

David,
Bug 1773822 was fixed in 103.0b1. Is it better for you now? It is consistently better for me.

I installed 103.0b1 (64-bit). Problem is not fixed, but better. I displayed a message in its own window, clicked the message menu item, hovered over move-to, and hovered over recent. The application appeared hung and the list did not populate. If I clicked on the menu pop-out, Windows gave me the app-busy icon and changed the window border to indicate busy. I waited a bit and the recent list populated. I tried the same on several other messages and each time it populated faster, eventually to become instantaneous.

I have begun using favorites instead of recent when moving messages. That always populates instantly and I like that better, anyway, not having done that click path in past.

I still see slowness with beta 103.

Severity: -- → S3

I am been hitting this too. Linux here.

The program doesn't hang, but takes 100% CPU and eats TONS of RAM for a minute or so. Besides, the system UI is frozen because Thunderbird is displaying a popup menu, so I have to sit there just waiting for an entire minute.

Quite inconvenient.

Your version number would be helpful. This issue is only patched in developement, not yet in beta or version 102.

I am still hitting this bug after upgrading to 102.0.2.

How is 103.0b6 or 102.0.3 ?

With version 103.0b5 (64-bit) I see the same issue but it does not hang as long for recents.

I see the same issue with 102.1.2 (Windows 64-bit):
File > Recent hangs for 1-20 seconds to open the list. When repeated in the same window (message list or message window) it opens immediately, but delays again when used in a new window (usually a new message window when the old has been filed). While hanging, all TB windows stop responding, but there isn't an obviously large CPU usage.

I do have a large mailbox, 20 GB offline cache in 268 files (so ~134 folders). Nevertheless, accessing the folders directly with File > Account > folders is instantaneous.

This has been a problem since I upgraded from 91 to 102 on 29/7/2022. Sorry, I can't test a beta version, but perhaps my observation is still a useful data point.

Thanks, Tim.

With version 104.0b2 (64-bit) this issue is resolved.

Thank you for the update. This is excellent.

Thanks for letting us know it now works. This is good news. The version you installed was a release candidate with the fixes that may become the final version. But, there may likely be yet another update to 102.2.0 next week so be mindful to do a Help > About Thunderbird to see if it checks for another post-release-candidate update. That way you know you'll be on an official version.

Thank you for the feedback. This is exactly what I wanted to hear - because that means bug 1776280 must have fixed your issue. That patch is NOT in 102.1.2.

Versus reports of problems which have previously been reported as resolved, such as this bug, which would have been the result of the several patches that have been shipped prior to 102.2.0.

Did you read bug 1776280 comment #9?

I've installed Thunderbird 102.2.1 (64-Bit) on a Windows 10 64-bit system - and I still have the issue described in this thread. I tried 103.0b1 (64-bit), but the problem was still there:

When I select one or several emails and then choose "move to" -> "recent", TB hangs for about 20 seconds. When I repeat the procedure within a short time, the recent folder list shows instantly (as it should). However, after some minutes, TB hangs again for about 20 seconds...

My TB folder is quite large, about 18 GB in several mailbox folders. In all other aspects, TB shows no speed issues/it does not hang/freeze.

Thanks for the link. 102.2.2 works fine! No freezes!
