User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:101.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/101.0

Steps to reproduce:

View e-mail from my telco.

Actual results:

The e-mail from my telco is meshed together with other e-mails that arrived at about the same time.

In the view message pane I see what looks like the intended mail. In that same message window I see the message headers and the actual content of other mails. Some content seems binary or encrypted, other content is in plain text. For instance: the e-mail from Github notifing me they I just logged on to Buzilla can be seen at the very bottom of the message right now. It got added dynamically!

When viewing the message source you get the same effect: multiple message (and headers) meshed together.

When looking at this mail or one of the mails that it now includes in my webmail it looks perfectly fine: no other mails visible, headers are ok, etc..

Expected results:

Just show one mail and the headers of THAT mail when viewing the source.

I can provide more details in private. The mails contain private info I do not just want to post here.

Please note: all 4 images are from the same e-mail as shown in the mail window. There is a LOT more in between these mails as well, but I think the point is clear...

Sounds like bug 1742975

Sounds like bug 1742975

I think it is the same indeed. But we are a lot of versions farther down the road now...
Hope this gets fixed.

Has anyone been able to reproduce this yet? If not: I think I can help.

The corrupted message appears to be getting longer and longer (new e-mails getting added) and now takes a while for me to open.

HOWEVER:

  1. When I move the corrupted message to any other (empty) IMAP folder the message is shown as it should.
  2. When I add messages that can be found in the original corrupted mail to THAT folder they will be added to the previously uncorrupted message, rendering it corrupt as well.
  3. When I remove the extra messages I added to cause the corruption from that folder the corruption remains.
  4. When I then move the corrupted message to any other (empty) IMAP mailbox the corruption is gone.
  5. When I add messages that do not appear in the original corrupted messages to the folder with the uncorrupted copy it remains fine.

It seems to me it cannot be just some kind of wrong message (or header) formatting that is causing the issue, there has to be interaction with other messages and the local DB. Again: the corrupted message remains fine when I look at it via Roundcube webmail, there is no corruption server-side.

If anyone still need to reproduce this: I think it will work if I send the mail that get's corrupted and one or two mails that get added. Seems to me I am able to reproduce it without much effort. Let me know if that's needed.

Does it always occur with the same emails? Or does it just happen regardless of which emails are coming in?

if it's a particular email, it'd be great to get a copy of it - ideally not from Thunderbird (where the local copy might be corrupt by the time it's written to disk). I think most webmail clients have a "view raw message" or something that'll let you download the raw message directly?

Otherwise, I'm hacking in some logging code to try and diagnose this stuff over in Bug 1742975 - would you be interested in trying out a custom build and seeing if it picks anything up?

One other question: does the corruption happen if you copy messages rather than moving them?

I had this issue too, and the fix for Bug 1742975 resolved it for me.
