User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/103.0.5060.53 Safari/537.36 Edg/103.0.1264.37

Steps to reproduce:

Dismissing updates

Actual results:

Next day the same Version is presented as a update. For example : I have Version 102.0 installed. I am notified that there is a available update. The update is to install Version 102.0.
I recently upgraded to Version 102, hoping against hope, that this same problem from Version 91.X.X would be resolved.
It wasn't.

Expected results:

If a Update to is offered for installation, then it should not be the same Version that is already installed.

Right, this shouldn't happen, but rarely does.
A bit technical, but this may help analysis:

  1. From Settings > General > Config Editor (button at the bottom), change or create pref "app.update.log" and set it to "true".
  2. Restart TB.
  3. Open the "about" dialog to get a baseline
    3a. Open Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J)
3b. Find everything starting with "AUS:"
  4. When you get the unsolicited update notification check error console again, and report here

This or related bugs have been reported more frequently since about 91.*.

Would it be possible to extend the safe-mode so that it (optionally) deletes all cache files related to updates? It's always difficult to explain to normal people which files in which path they need to delete in order to fix the problem manually.

I'm wondering, how often this bug occurs in Firefox versus Thunderbird?

(In reply to Alex Ihrig [:Thunderbird_Mail_DE] from comment #2)

This or related bugs have been reported more frequently since about 91.*.

It does seem that way. But there certainly is variation in the reports.

Loads of reports of issue regarding constant requests to update, however, all of the cases I've seen so far, the people with a problem are using Avast and it is blocking necessary access.
Loads of reports of same problem in Avast forums since earlier this year,

It seems the Avast shields are blocking required access.

It may also mean in Thunderbird 'Settings' > General > Updates section, the update history is not being recorded and so it thinks it needs to get update. This effects people who are running an up to date version, but the history is not recorded and cannot be updated.
It requires you to make exceptions for the following:
Add as exception: 'aus.thunderbird.net' and also 'www.thunderbird.net'
use info at link: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Antivirus-scan-exclusions

Please check Firewall and make exceptions as advised and see if this fixes your issue.
Also report on which Anti-Virus and Firewall you are using.

I would think we can close this. AFAIK, it's a problem caused by Avast and other AV/Firewalls messing up.
Since the report was filed, we also changed some code to be even more in line with what Firefox has.
