Found in

  • Fx104.0b3

Affected versions

  • Fx 104.0b3
  • Fx 105.0a1
  • Fx 103.0

Preconditions

  • Have the browser.search.region set to US.
  • Have the search bar added.

Affected platforms

  • Windows 10
  • Ubuntu 20.04
  • macOS

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch Firefox.
  2. Open any random page.
  3. With that page in the foreground, in the search bar, write a term that would generate ads.
  4. Use alt+enter to submit the result and check that on the newly open tab there are ads.
  5. Go to about:telemetry -> Raw JSON -> Raw Data and search for 'withads.searchbar' telemetry ping.

Expected result

  • The 'withads' ping for the performed search is found.

Actual result

  • There is no 'withads.searchbar' telemetry ping registered.

Regression range

  • I have managed to reproduce the issue all the way back to Firefox 87. Looks like the issue is existent since the implementation of withads SAP.

Additional notes

  • The issue occurs for all search engines where we track ads (Google, Bing and Duckduckgo).
  • 'adclick' pings from the resulting page also have the SAP as unknown.
