Hey Spero, sorry for that! Have you tried asking a question in Thunderbird support ?
If you think that this is a bug in TB, we need a lot more details
- have you updated from an existing profile? Did you import addresses? What data type? How?
- what type of address book (local, LDAP, CardDav...)?
- have you verified that matching contacts exist in the AB?
- on which field of the contact does the character you typed match? If email address, is it third or higher?
- What happens if you type some more characters like
John?
have you updated from an existing profile? Did you import addresses? What data type? How?
A) this is a clean download of ThunderBird
A1) addresses were imported from an outlook19 export on the same pc. My outlook data file died so i downloaded TB
what type of address book (local, LDAP, CardDav...)?
A) local
have you verified that matching contacts exist in the AB?
A) All contacts are in TB and matched to feilds
on which field of the contact does the character you typed match? If email address, is it third or higher?

What happens if you type some more characters like John?

I was able to reproduce it. See bug 1789793
@Spero: If you want to manually narrow down your problem, this is what I did:
- Export the address book as VCARD/.vcf
- Import it into a new seperate adress book
- Make sure you work in the new/backup adress book!!
- Delete contacts until the search function works again. This will help you find the problem.
In detail:
- Delete all contacts that start with "a". Then try to search.
- If it doesn't work, delete all contacts with "b". Try search again.
- Delete "c" ...
- Repeat until the search works. Remember the respective letter.
- Delete all contacts and import again.
- Start with deleting single contacts that start with the letter. Continue until search works.
- Check the problematic contact in the .vcf file for any weird entries.
Of cause you may have more than one "corrupted" entry.

Per comment 11, this is a duplicate of bug 1789793 (recently fixed).
Thanks Spero and JS (comment 12)!
