Steps to reproduce:
received a mail with charset=gb2312
Actual results:
Mail subject not correctly displayed with charset=gb2312, in message lists window and message head window.
Expected results:
Mail subject should be shown correcty with charset=gb2312

There is no charset declared in this email at all.

Here the charset is indeed specified in the multipart body, but the header is not MIME-encoded. The specification in the body is irrelevant for the header.
Unless otherwise specified, Thunderbird always uses UTF-8 as default.
OK. So it is clear now why the subject isn't shown correctly. Thanks
However it is still a boring issue since I cannot control the sender's mail software.
And when there is no charset declared at all, the mail subject use utf-8 while the body use gb2312, it's still incomprehensible.
