User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:106.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/106.0

Steps to reproduce:

I have several filters set up to automatically organise certain automatic emails which I do not need to read, but do need to save, into folders. The filters are set to be active when 'Getting New Mail', however they are not acting when new mail is downloaded.

Actual results:

When I receive new mail, and it downloads mails which should be filtered, they appear in my inbox - but they are not filtered. If I press 'Get messages' again, then the filters are applied and the emails are moved from the inbox to the various folders. If I don't press 'Get Messages' again, then they sit in my inbox, clogging it up with spam. But this isn't really applying the filters upon 'Getting New Mail', it's actually more like manually applying the filters, because I have to hit the 'Get Messages' button for the filter to apply, or wait for the next scheduled time that mails are downloaded from the server.

Expected results:

The messages should have been filtered automatically and immediately that they were downloaded

Additional information, in case useful:

The email account type is IMAP.
The Thunderbird version is 102.4.1 (64 bit)
Op Sys: Win 11 64 bit

I raised this as a Thunderbird support question initially - see link for info:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1394732?utm_campaign=questions-reply&utm_source=notification&utm_medium=email#answer-1544155

One support person replied suggested that they had the same issue, but only with IMAP accounts, whereas another user reported that they used IMAP but that the issue did not occur for them. Hence I presume that this is a bug rather than an intended 'feature'.

Just a second to the original. Specific issue: Yahoo has decided that its IMAP will only serve the latest 10,000 messages in its mailbox. T'bird has the bad habit of requiring two-way sync, so when Yahoo stops serving the messages, T'bird deletes them. This is very, very bad. The workaround should be to use a filter to copy all messages, when getting new mail, to a different non-IMAP folder. I set up a filter in TB 102 on the IMAP account so that all new messages would be copied. (That's the only filter on that IMAP account.) Instead, only a fraction of messages, with no obvious pattern, get copied. So instead I have to manually, now and then, batch-copy ALL messages, newer than the previous batch copy, from the IMAP folder to the non-sync'd folder.
