Steps to reproduce:

1 open a video from good if you choose higher quality
2 play it on firefox and brave or chromium
now monitor system usage you will see that firefox using far more cpu than other if chromium is using 25% firefox will use 50% and this is across all devices
even if you download that app from flathub or snap

Actual results:

i see more cpu usage in all systems
in firefox more cpu usage where as chromim and brave using less even half i have attached

Expected results:

it should be same whether you are in firefox or chromium or brave or downloaded from flathub or snap
i find all are same firefox using more system resources

Hey, could you please post your about:support text so we can get a look at your hardware list?

Also, if you can, please help us out by generating a performance profile to diagnose.

https://profiler.firefox.com/

Please see also: Bug 1778560.

i find no issues playing videos in tor browsers i think as tor uses a old lts version of firefox so it is not a problem but in new one it is a issue.

linuxusernonadmin, thanks for all the additional info!

I compared the CPU usage between the latest Nightly 108.0a1 and Chromium on my Ubuntu 20.04 x64 machine, but I didn't get the difference the user is seeing.
For the time being, I'm moving this to Core > Graphics, so that people with more knowledge in this area could take a look at it - if this is not the right component, please move it to a more appropriate one.

Component: General → Graphics
Product: Firefox → Core

sure thanks for your support

Your config data and your profiler runs show that your system is running software Webrender, which will exercise the CPU more for things like video. You haven't flipped the pref to choose this option, so it's likely happening because your adapter/driver are on the blacklist for our hardware video path because of visual problems. In other words, it's blacklisted for a reason. If you can, update your driver and see if that gets your machine off the blocklist.

Lee, do we have a pref for users to opt-out of the blocklist and force hardware Webrender?

It was either gfx.webrender.all or gfx.webrender.enabled that should bypass the blocklist.

how to do it i dont know need some help exactly what i need to do here

Sure. When you navigate to the "about:config" URL, you will be presented with an interface for changing Firefox preferences that aren't otherwise accessible. The one you need to change is gfx.webrender.all, and you need to set it to true. So the steps are:

  1. Navigate to "about:config".
  2. In the field at top where it says "Search preference name", type "gfx.webrender.all".
  3. In the row where "gfx.webrender.all" appears, there will be a button on the right-hand side with two arrows. Click that button and confirm that the text in the middle of the row now reads "true".
  4. Restart your browser.

That should force your browser to use the hardware video path, which will reduce your CPU usage for your use case. It may also cause visual problems for some web content, which is why your driver is on our blocklist. You also should update your driver if possible which will in general give you a better experience with visuals in Firefox.

Great. Now that you've set gfx.webrender.all to true, and restarted Firefox, does the Graphics section of your "about:support" show that you have "Compositing: WebRender"? That would indicate that you are on the hardware video path. And if that did work, how is your CPU usage now?

Flags: needinfo?(fahad94812)

it solved that issue but it is not too smooth but yes cpu usage is as same as it was in chromium or brave but why it was false by default it should have been true so can you look in it
i think video was slightly less smooth thn the chromium base browsers but in chromium i did not need to do anything i find that downloaded from flatpak and snap in both case cpu usage was high and as per your recommendation i find cpu usages goes down with making that option true making the issue disappear hence i think that option should be turn on and true by default.

Flags: needinfo?(fahad94812)

Yes, agreed, and we have that setting true by default for systems that pass the blocklist. So this is a situation where we've unnecessarily got your system on the blocklist.

Andrew, if I'm understanding the code path correctly, it looks like the config information from comment 6 would cause us to blocklist all Wayland drivers. Is that correct? Can we safely relax this?

Summary: high cpu usage while playing youtube videos → high cpu usage on Wayland software WebRender while playing youtube videos

The user doesn't get HW-WR because of bug 1673939. I'm not sure if newer drivers have fixed the issue, there seems to have been some related changes mentioned in the upstream issue:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/3720

Otherwise, Wayland compositing is not in a state to ship as far as I understand it. The best we could probably do is offer OpenGL compositing to allow DMABuf usage without full HW-WR.

yesterday i forgot to show you result here is it

now it is as same as it was before but still i find tor browser was smoother while playing videos i know it was built with esr of 91 i think but which is not the case in newer firefox instead of getting better it become worse and as you can see after changing according to you i find it is using less cpu but still compare to tor and chromium firefox 106 is less smooth while comapring side by side.
it was good before and i really want to use firefox so hope to see a fix in next update
and thanks for your help and if you need any data or help i can help to fix this let me know.

i think i have reinstalled my os just before 5days and i have tested on other devices and tried with snap and flatpak versions also it was same as the native .rpm version all of them using tremendous amount of cpu

the issue is less visible in x11 for kde or gnome but after turning on that wayland have even less usage thn x11

The bug has a release status flag that shows some version of Firefox is affected, thus it will be considered confirmed.

I don't believe it's related to WR-linux-wayland-compositing (Wayland compositing - FEATURE_WEBRENDER_COMPOSITOR).
We don't use that anywhere it's an experimental (and perhaps already obsoleted) feature.

All Linux boxes with appropriate HW should run with nsIGfxInfo::FEATURE_WEBRENDER (both Wayland/EGL and X11/EGL).

updated to 109 but problem is still there

tested on ubuntu if you are in wayland video play from youtube using 50% of cpu but with ungoogled chromium it is 13 and in chromium or brave is is 9%

when will this hardware accelerated video playback will be fixed. it is really annoying i have to use brave for now as it is still not yet fixed.

if it is not an issue in tor browser how it caan be a issue in mother firefox??

(In reply to Darkspirit from comment #33)

I think the two Bugs have different causes, or are activated by different driver-specific limits. On a M1 MAX I can reproduce Bug 1726431 using the testcase in that bug, but I can't reproduce with the testcase from https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/3720. To me, that means that there is a real driver-specific issue for the R600 family devices.

i will also try on mac m1 i have not yet flash that asahi but once sound and graphics is ready i will f;ash and try this issue on that also.

here is a video report

Upstream driver fixes noted in
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/3720 imply that the root
cause has been fixed. Bug 1673939 has been closed and it's not clear we
should keep these drivers on the blacklist.
