Steps to reproduce:
View->Toolbars->Quick filter bar
Type in a filter, interact with results
Press escape to clear filter
Actual results:
Quick filter bar is removed
Expected results:
A recent change is that Quick Filter keep closing rather than simply clearing the message filter.
First, a secondary annoyance. After every update my preferences of quick filter bar is removed. So randomly over the years I've needed to do quick filter and find it's not there and get angry that I have to go back through the menus to put reselect it. Please respect user preferences between updates.
Recently it kept going away and I just assumed there were a lot of new updates until today I finally figured out if I hit escape that it closed it(previously it'd just clear the text and return me back to full folder contents)
Primary search is absolutely overkill for 99.99999% of my searches. In fact, the results are typically not what I'm looking for. I only use primary search maybe once a month. I use quick filter multiple times a day. It going away at the drop of a hat has created a very frustrating user experience.
Please return hitting escape to represent clearing out the filter, NOT removing the quick filter bar. Please fix version update where it stops removing my settings.

Esc once will clear, Esc with nothing in the search will close. I don't think anything happened here in ages.

Do any other toolbars close when you press the Esc key?
Could a setting be added to stop this behavior? Unless I go to View->Toolbars and turn off Quick Filter Bar, I never want it to go away.

Well, it's not exactly a toolbar logically, more like a search/filter thing. Many of those are volatile indeed. That said...

Agreed, sorry for that. It's really quite frustrating. I've proposed the setting (aka preference) 9 years ago (Bug 928365 Comment 3), but maybe this didn't itch enough people to get implemented, and/or there was insufficient manpower at the time.

That's currently wontfix per Bug 928365 Comment 17 from Aleca, our UX lead, who hinted that the quick filter bar will undergo big changes for the next release (which would make this pref redundant?):
We're drastically changing the UI for the next cycle, rebuilding the entire mail tab UI, so the quick filter bar will have a completely different usability paradigm. Marking this as wontfix.
