+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #694925 +++

STR

  1. Create a new mailing list
  2. Edit the mailing list properties via dialog (right-click on ML in dir pane > Properties, or select ML in contacts list > Edit button)
  3. Add the secondary (non-default) email address of a contact (from the containing AB): e.g. secondary.email@example.com, and confirm dialog with OK.
  4. Verify if correct email address is now contained in the mailing list.

Actual

  • Primary/default email address of the contact was added instead.
  • Thunderbird unilaterally changes the data I added
  • Potential privacy violations (sending confidential stuff to the wrong email address of the recipient, e.g. business stuff to private address, or private stuff to business address, both very bad! also disclosing random other/private email address of recipient to the mailing list) => S2
  • For added confusion, trying to rectify an existing mailing list entry (via dialog) from primary@example.com to secondary@example.com will just delete primary@example.com, but not add secondary@example.com.

Expected

  • Do not change the email address which the user added to the list.

Imho, this should be fixed asap and uplifted to 102 ESR.

This bug exists in version 128.10.0esr

One contact in 'Personal Address Book' has two email addresses and one is set as default.
Create a Mailing List as sub to 'Personal Address Book'

Need to add both of that contacts email addresses because I want to send one email to both.
Mailing List > Edit List
Add both email addresses and so far ok. Click on OK.

Select all the contacts in the Mailing List and click on 'Write' to see individual names.

Actual REsults
For the person with two email addresses only their default email address is in the 'TO' field.

Expected REsults
For the person with two email addresses, both addresses are included.

REcheck the Mailing List > Edit List
Only the default email address is shown, the other has been removed.

In Personal Address Book
Remove the default option so not set - to see if I can get both email addresses - SAve.
Then Edit contact again and the default has been reset on first email address.
Not possible to have none set as default.

Not possible to add both email addresses to a Mailing List- can only add whatever is set as default.

Only workaround is to have the contact added twice - one for each email address which is not really a desirable solution.

REported as a problem in the Support Forum

A particular issue with the current situation is that initially it looks like both email addresses for one contact have been successfully added to Mailing list. There is no warning that non default email addresses will be auto removed.

If you are using the Address Book to add to Write message, you see individual email addresses in TO field.
It's too easy to not notice one has been silently removed when there are alot of email addresses, but a visual check shows it's removed.

If you add the mailing list using the Contact Sidebar in Write window, it adds the actual Mailing List name. Normally this is perfectly ok, but you may wrongly assume both email addresses are included. You would not know if email did not get sent to a chosen email address.
It is only when you recheck the Mailing list via Address Book that you would notice the non default email address has been auto removed.
