Details

Use Insert -> Image to insert a .png image from https://www.sample-videos.com/download-sample-png-image.php as the body of a HTML message using Thunderbird 102.5.0 under Windows 11Pro. Enter some short text such as 20MB as the Alternative text.

No problem sending using a 100KB or 10MB embedded image. However, every time that I try embedding a 20MB image Thunderbird crashes. This occurs before I actually see the embedded image displayed as part of the message. Same problem occurs if I check the checkbox to "attach" the image instead of embedding it.

The problem also occurs in safe mode. I used to be able to send 20MB attachments with that email provider (fastmail.fm). The fastmail web site states:

"You may send any kind of attachment, as long as the resulting email is under 70 MB in total size. Combined with email encoding, this usually means an attachment should be no larger than 50 MB. The same size limit of 70 MB applies to received email as well"

I've tried it about 7 times in a row now and every attempt with 20MB crashes Thunderbird.

This problem does not occur if I use em client 9.2.1222 (ca10485) to send the exact same image. I sent the message to my fastmail account and I have no problem viewing it in Thunderbird though it claims the size is only 577KB. The original file is 20.647KB according to Windows Explorer. If I save the message (in Thunderbird) as a .eml file its only 512KB.

The exact same problem also occurs using my Gmail IMAP account, my Outlook.com IMAP account and my GMX.com IMAP account

I also tried Thunderbird 109.0a1 (2022-12-07) (64-bit) which is installed in a different directory and has no add-ons. It too crashes when I press the OK button when inserting a 20MB png image in the HTML message.

A related bug report is https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1748746 which is about TB 91 crashing when embedding a 20MB or larger GIF file. I no longer have version 91 installed but did not run into a problem sending 20MB attachments with it.

Summary: Thunderbird crashes when send message with 20MB embedded image → Thunderbird crashes when inserting 20MB embedded image

Can reproduce with the Insert Image dialog. Drag-n-drop to embed seems to work fine.
