User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:108.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/108.0
Steps to reproduce:
I opend Trash and emptied it using the right click menu. After that, while still in Trash, I wanted to compress all folders of the account via File - Compress al folders...
Actual results:
Compress was not carried out.
Compress will be carried out if either I open another folder or do not empty Trash before compressing.
Expected results:
Compress should work, when in Trash directly after emptying it.

English version is "compact". Are you using a non-English version?
This works fine for me using beta 109 on Mac, both gmail and fastmail account.
- click trash
- right+click empty
- file > Compact folders
So I'm not sure why you are seeing this.

Works for me in 110 on Linux. Anything interesting in Menubar > Tools > Developer Tools > Error Console?

Sorry for wrong term "compress" instead of "compact". I use the localized German version 102.6.1/32bit (latest release) on Win10/64 Home (19044.2251), but had the problem also in previous versions.
When I empty 'Papierkorb' (Trash) and then click on 'Datei - Alle Ordner des Kontos komprimieren' (File - Compact all folders of the account), nothing happens and the information in the statusbar "Papierkorb geleert" (Trash emptied) remains. Compact works in Trash, when not emptied before.

The behaviour has changed since v115 : now compact folders only works for the opened folder, not for all other folders too as one would expect.
(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk) from comment #6)
Anje, can you reproduce?
Yes.
using beta 122.0b1
Something is not working correctly.
This is an imap account - not gmail.
In my 'Bugzilla' folder:
- I delete a load of old emails with 'Subject: needinfo....'
Noted:
In Folder Pane: Bugzilla folder says size has reduced to 5.4MB after deleting emails. So that size is auto reducing as I delete emails.
In Profile folders: the 'Bugzilla' mbox file has a size of 8,488KB amd 'Bugzilla.msf' a size 333KB. Nothing is altering the file even if I refresh or reselct to check.
- Emptied 'Deleted' folder (right click select 'Empty Deleted') and stay selected on folder - I only download headers for this folder -
Noted:
In Folder Pane 'Deleted' folder size is auto removed - so assume nil, BUT total count remains on 109
- File > 'Compact folders'
Noted:
Status bar says : mail account name :compacting folder...
There seems to be a bit of a delay - up to 10 minutes and there is no notification of any compact result.
Actual REsults:
In Folder Pane: 'Bugzilla' folder says size is still 5.4MB after compacting.
In Profile folders: the 'Bugzilla' mbox file has a size of 8,488KB and 'Bugzilla.msf' a size 333KB
Cannot use the Folder Pane folder sizes to judge whether a compact has occured because something has changed in the code. The Folder Pane folder sizes now show a size of what is 'displayed' in the Message List/Thread Pane as previously it showed the profile file size.
This meant that previously - eg: 102* upon 'compacting' a folder you could see the 'Folder Pane folder size' reduce. This is no longer possible. So you end thinking you have compacted the folder but this may not necessarilly be the case.
You have to check the profile folder and this is when you discover it has not changed.
Contents indicate many 'Subject: needinfo...' emails still in the 'Bugzilla' mbox file which I know have been deleted.
'X-Mozilla-Status: 0009' does not exist on any email in the Bugzilla mbox file, all are still 0001
No Folders compacted.
The 'Trash' mbox file has completely disappeared.
In Folder Pane: The 'Deleted' folder only removes the incorrect total count after reselecting the Deleted folder.
New Test:
- Account Settings > Synchronisation & Storage > 'Advanced' - select 'Deleted' folder to download full headers.
Performed same test.
- Deleted a load of 'Resolved' emails
In Folder Pane: 'Bugzilla' folder says size is 4.9MB - auto reducing as I delete emails
In Profile folders: the 'Bugzilla' mbox file has a size of 8,516KB and 'Bugzilla.msf' a size 346KB
It has increased a bit as some new mail arrived, but it is not a size that's close to what is displayed in Folder Pane.
Checked 'Bugzilla' mbox file and it contains deleted emails which have still have 'X-Mozilla-Status: 0001'
I expected there to be emails with 'X-Mozilla-Status: 0009' for those 'marked as deleted' !! Apparently this seems to only work in Pop account and 'Local Folders' mail account.
In Folder Pane: 'Deleted' folder - 42 emails total size 510KB
In profile folder: 'Trash' mbox file 513KB
- Emptied 'Deleted' folder (right click select 'Empty Deleted') and remain on Deleted folder
Result
Deleted folder looks empty in Message List view
In Folder Pane: 'Deleted' folder size 510 kb but no message count.
- Keep focus on 'Deleted' folder
- File > 'Compact folders'
Actual REsults:
Status Bar says 'Done compacting 0 saved'.
In Folder Pane: 'Deleted' folder now has no size but suddenly it says 42 total email count!
In Folder Pane: 'Bugzilla' folder says size is still 4.9MB after compacting.
In Profile folders: the 'Bugzilla' mbox file has a size of 8,516KB and 'Bugzilla.msf' a size 346KB
In profile folders: the 'Trash' mbox file has disappeared. 'Trash.msf' size 3kb.
Nothing is compacting.
Whether imap Deleted folder is downloading full copies or just headers has no effect on outcome.
No folders are compacted in the imap account where 'Bugzilla' is located.
The imap gmail account did not compact either.
The 'Local Folders' account did not compact.
Expected:
- Folder Pane folder size to be the same as the mbox file size. So upon compacting you can see the size reduce accordingly.
- In mbox files, eg: 'X-Mozilla-Status: 0009' to be shown in emails that are 'marked as deleted' prior to compacting. So, 'marked as deleted' emails can be located.
- 'File' > 'Compact Folders' - as 'Folders' is plural, I would expect it to compact all folders regardless of whatever folder is currently selected.
Check compacting on Bugzilla folder:
Perform a separate Right click 'Compact folder' on 'Bugzilla folder and it says Done compacting 3.4MB saved.
In Profile folders: the 'Bugzilla' mbox file has a size of 5,010KB and 'Bugzilla.msf' a size 262KB
Actual Result
Compacting occured manually on selected folder ok.
New Test
In Folder Pane: select name of an account
'File > Compact Folders'
Actual Result
The selected account is compacted for all folders.
