Steps to reproduce:

I am getting scam, span and unwanted emails. My solution has been to create a Filter Rule that if an email is from a contact that is in a custom contact list then delete those unwanted emails. To bypass being flagged, blocked or deleted scummy email campaigns do not provide a sender and BCC all contacts in the campaign meaning there is no way to filter them. I have found if you view the Full Header of the Email then you can see who the email came from via the 'Return-Path'. There is no existing option to use the 'Return Path' in the Filters. You need to make a Custom Entry in the Filters for 'Return-Path and it does not have the ability to follow the rule 'if a Return-Path Contact is in a Custom Contact List then Delete the Email'. If you make a custom entry of 'Return-Path' the subsequent options are very limited. The 'Return-Path' needs to be added to the predefined options where it actually works exactly the same as the Sender Option does. This is how some spam, scam and unwanted emails bypass being able to be blocked and force their way into our inbox. How can you block an email without a sender? As an email campaign, it is designed to email multiple contacts all at once and that is why the BCC Field is being misused so there is no sender at all. If this problem is solved where we can use the 'Return-Path' as a criteria combined with the 'Sender' Option then this solves the loophole once and for all! So the rule would need to be as below...
If the Email Sender is in a Contact List titled AutoDelete then Delete the Email
If the Return-Path is in a Contact List titled AutoDelete then Delete the Email

  • Note: The same contact list 'AutoDelete' is being used for both filter executions but right now this is not possible and that is what needs to change!

Actual results:

There is no way to have the following Filter Rule:
If the Return-Path is in a Contact List titled AutoDelete then Delete the Email

Expected results:

Please add the 'Return-Path' to the preset conditions a filter can be created with.
Please add the ability to create a rule based on the 'Return Path' with all the same conditions as the 'Sender' Option.

Summary: Need New Filter Condition 'Return-Path' → Need New Filter Condition 'Return-Path' address is in address book
Summary: Need New Filter Condition 'Return-Path' address is in address book → Need new filter condition 'Return-Path' with address operators, esp. `Address is in address book...` (for spam filtering)

Thanks Dom for your RFE! I understand your use case, which makes some sense.
Putting every possible header on the list of criteria increases the discovery challenges unless some intelligent way of hiding away the advanced headers by default is found and coded up, which is a bit of a barrier here.
In terms of resources, ease of implementation and chances of realization, imo bug 315258 will fare better. I'll make the call for now and add your voice to bug 315258, which would also solve your scenario. That bug is also motivated by the spam scenario.
