Actual results:
Hyperlinks in mail messages either open in Chromium or not at all.
Expected results:
Hyperlinks should open in Firefox.
P.S. The action "Always ask" is generally ineffective. In dozens of attempts to activate hyperlinks in mail messages, I only got an application selection dialog once.

My Firefox is snap and set to default system browser, no setting in Thunderbird.
In general I do think this is working, so you'll have to figure out what's the issue with your exact setup.
Do you have chromium installed?
I am not sure whether it was installed by default in Ubuntu Studio 22.04 or installed as a dependency of something else.
AFAIK, I did not install it explicitly myself, and I am the only one with admin privileges on this PC.

Yes I have chromium installed, but not set as default.
I didn't set it as default either, but it still appeared as default in Thunderbird. As a last resort, I have simply uninstalled chromium. This allowed me to find "Use Firefox Web Browser (default)" in the actions list for http and https. Selecting these achieves the desired result, but the setting does not persist for https. The next time I open Thunderbird, the action entry for https is empty, and clicking on https links produces no reaction. How can I get this setting to stick?
P.S. After trying again, I see that clicking on an https link in an e-mail in Thunnderbird does now open it in Firefox, even though the https action in Thunderbird's settings remains empty.
