If you select a message marked as junk in the message list, the focus immediately jumps to the message preview and you have to go back to the message list with Shift+TAB. If you then go up or down or vice versa, and then go down again to the next message, the focus jumps to the message preview of the selected message that is not junk.

Unfortunately, this doesn't happen with every message marked as junk, for this reason it can be a bit more difficult to reproduce. However, it should occur frequently enough.

Steps to reproduce

  1. First make sure that there are messages in your inbox that Thunderbird has marked as junk.
  2. In the message list, use the arrow keys to select a message marked as junk.

Result

The screen reader is told by Thunderbird that this message has been marked as junk and the focus immediately jumps to the message preview.

Expected

The focus should still remain in the message list.

Good catch! I am able to reproduce this 100% of the time.
I am always running thunderbird with message preview hidden thus I was unable to notice it my-self.
I can imagine this might be a deal breaker for new thunderbird screen reader users.

Are you able to check if the focus change also occurs without screen reader?

This wfm on 113.0a1 (2023-04-03) (64-bit), Win10 without screen reader. I manually marked some messages as Junk and then used Arrow up/down to navigate in the message list across the junk items, which worked, and focus never moved to message list.

Personally, I am unfortunately unable to test without a screen reader as I am completely blind.

I can do the following although it may not be what you are looking for as on linux accessibility support is enabled conditionally on the Thunderbird startup.

  • Launch thunderbird with orca running
  • Use F6 or shift+F6 to focus the message list.
  • When I am surre I have navigated to the message list, I turn off orca by pressing alt+super+s.
  • I can blindly navigate using up or down arrow key.
  • As soon as a message marked as spam is passed by the focus jumps to the preview document although the screen reader is not running.

Greetings

Peter

I manually marked some messages as Junk and then used Arrow up/down to navigate in the message list across the junk items, which worked, and focus never moved to message list.

OK, please try the following again:

  • Switch to the message list where there are more than two messages.
  • Mark a message as spam, if necessary.
  • Use Arrow Up and Down to select a message that has been marked as spam.
  • Next, go to another message with Arrow Up or Arrow Down.

Result: at the latest when you have pressed Arrow Up or Down to select another message, the focus jumps to the message preview.

When navigating up and down in the message list passing by a message marked as junk moves the focus to the preview document for me meaning in order to continue with the navigation I have to use shift+F6 to move the focus back to the message list.
I can reproduce this with screen reader running and with screen reader switched off however I am unable to test this if accessibility support is not triggered at all as I need to have my screen reader running while starting thunderbird.
Currently I am trying this again with
Thunderbird 113.0a1 (2023-04-10) (64-bit on linux

This should be fixed before release of Thunderbird 115 for everyone.
