Steps to reproduce problem:

  • Create a profile with an email account with user-selectable special folders (e.g. POP3)
  • Create a new folder
  • Try to set it as a special folder

In, say, Thunderbird 91, the new folder would automatically gain the appropriate special folder icon. If the old folder didn't have a default name, the icon would also be removed from it. (I don't know why the default folders can't have their special icons removed but that's not what this bug is about.)

  • Hey Neil, wrt STR,
    • what do mean by "user-selectable special folders"?
    • can you elaborate how you "set it as a special folder"?
  • So Actual result is: Restart needed for special folder icons (like junk, archive) to update in folderpane tree?
  • Expected result: Update icons immediately after "set as special folder" without a restart?

Neil, can you still reproduce using 114.0b<something> or Daily?

can you elaborate how you "set it as a special folder"?

Account Settings > Junk Settings > Destination > Move > Other

I am not able to reproduce using daily 115 ... my test junk folder gets the special junk icon. However, it doesn't immediately move to the top.

Yes, the particular detail of this bug is wfm on Daily 115.0a1 (2023-05-15) (64-bit), Win10.

  • after setting custom junk folder, it gets junk icon instantly without restart (=> wfm)
  • Old default spam folder keeps its junk icon until restart (not ideal)
  • New spam folder is only moved up into default position after restart (as Wayne noted, again not ideal)
  • New spam folder does not appear in Unified folders, even after restart (needs a new bug).
  • Trying to return to default Junk folder on the account does not have any visual effect, even after restart (needs a new bug).

Working for you now in 114.0b6? Or 115.0b1 out next week.
