Details
In order to learn more about popularity of MKV we need telemetry data from the release channel (important for web compat work).
There are some telemetry data for Nightly and Beta
https://glam.telemetry.mozilla.org/firefox/probe/media_mkv_canplay_requested/explore?activeBuckets=%5B%22yes%22%2C%22no%22%5D¤tPage=1&proportionMetricType=counts&timeHorizon=ALL
Data coming from Nightly and beta are not providing enough information to support the hypothesis of "growing interest" and the instrumentation should be uplifted to the release. We might also consider improving it while working on it.

Moving this into the A/V playback component, as that's where bug 1429986 was filed.
