When an email is digitally signed with OpenPGP and PGP/MIME, the digital signature is usually transported in a separate MIME part.
Many MUAs that don't support those signatures will show an email attachment of unknown type, and apparently that's considered disturbing by many people.
I think it would be nice if digital signatures were more ubiquitous, and to sign most emails sent by Thunderbird. However, as a precondition, it seems necessary to find a way to avoid those attachments.
The suggestion is to find a way to transport OpenPGP digital signatures in the email header, which would be ignored by non-supporting MUAs, and which Thunderbird and other supporting clients could process.
