Confirming this bug.
This happens on macOS with:
System Settings, Accessibility, Display, Increase Contrast set to On.
- Thunderbird theme as inherit system theme
- System theme as light

Steps to duplicate:
- Make sure Increase Contrast is set on settings.
- Look at the unread count on folders. For folders with new, unread messages, the gray is too light.
Update: This is for items with new messages.

Noting that the two colors (currently blue and gray) would correctly have a contrast with respect to each other of at least 3:1 to support people with color blindness.
Alternatively, consider using a different shape for new unread unfocused, or using a black outline and black number with white background.

Still happening for me in macOS 14.3.1, Thunderbird 115.8.0. I have System Settings, Accessibility, Display, Increase Contrast set to On.
If I turn Increase Contrast off, the issue goes away (but then I no longer have increased contrast throughout my system). I expect Thunderbird to work with Increase Contrast turned on.
I don't know whether Windows has a similar setting, and only use Thunderbird on Mac.

To clarify, I too am using Thunderbird's default theme. It's specifically that it doesn't play well with macOS's Increase Contrast setting.
