Steps to reproduce:

Setting mailnews.nav_crosses_folders = 0 in the advanced preferences and navigating unread messages and threads with either n or t sometimes hangs/freezes thunderbird. I say sometimes, because it's not always happening, but often enough that it feels like a coin toss.

Reverting the setting back to the default, with a confirmation dialog before jumping to other folders, avoids the freezing entirely. Re-enabling it, introduces the freezing again.

Actual results:

Thunderbird hangs/freezes for several mins, not reacting on inputs anymore. In the end I have to kill it.

Expected results:

Not freezing, this is a regression. It worked in versions prior to 115, never freezing once.

There's only one IMAP account configured, maybe around 2000 messages across all folders. And this happens with 3 fresh installs on 3 different linux systems, no shared config, no syncing or backup data used between them.
Affected are debian stable (v115.3.1), opensuse tumbleweed as well as the latest flatpak version.

Did 115.3.0 exhibit the hang?

Summary: Thunderbird freezes with mailnews.nav_crosses_folders → Thunderbird sometimes freezes with mailnews.nav_crosses_folders = 0

It seems to have been introduced with the supernova 115 release on all these platforms. Tumbleweed and flatpak were early adopters, debian followed only recently targeting the LTS versions. Experienced that issue right after the upgrade on all three.

Perhaps a timing issue since I unchecked the Keep messages in all folders for this account on this computer under Synchronizing and Storage?

Do you also experience this in version 128?

Do you also experience this in version 128?

Sorry for not getting back immediately, took me a while to upgrade to v128.3.1esr.

I gave that version a spin for a few days, with the same settings as described above (mailnews.nav_crosses_folders = 0 and without offline sync), and have not encountered a freezing issue so far.

Can be closed as completed, I guess. Thanks!

Sorry to reopen this again, but after a few more days on v128.3.3esr, and after a lot higher mail load, I re-encounter the same freezing issue. Strangely, it's less frequent than on v115 and sometimes works for days. Yet on other days it freezes three times per work session.

The offline sync makes no differences, though, freezes with or without it.

Thanks for the update. For version, please use the oldest known version where the problem occurs.

Version: Thunderbird 128 → Thunderbird 115

I am not sure, but maybe this will improve with the fix for bug 1842419, which is not yet in ESR 128.

rassoc, is the problem gone for you?

I'm now on 128.6.0esr and it does no longer freeze, hooray! Instead, it skips one or two folders from time to time, but that is a benign issue compared to the constant freezes of previous versions.

Thanks for the fixes!
