User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; de-AT; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; de-AT; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130 When 'show only subscribed folders' in the advanced server settings is activated, mozilla doesn't let me subscribe to new mail folders. It complains that the mail folder wasn't existing on the server. After deactivating the above setting, subscribing works perfectly ok. Of course, now mozilla shows me all folders. So I have to reenable the 'show only subscribed folders' setting again to get the required result. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. enable 'show only subscribed folders' in mail advanced server settings 2. subscribe to new mail folder 3. disable 'show only subscribed folders' in mail advanced server settings 4. subscribe to new mail folder Actual Results: step 2 reports an error, complaining that the mail folder wouldn't exist on the server. Expected Results: step 2 should have produced the same result as step 4. Subscribing to new mail folders should work, no matter what the setting for 'show only subscribed folders' is.

what's your imap server? do you have an imap server directory set?
My mail server is Cyrus IMAP4 v2.1.11 on FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE. The imap server directory is not set.

I have the same problem but the IMAP mail directory is set (to ~/IMAP).
I have a similar problem with Mozilla 1.2.1 on a Gentoo Linux machine. My IMAP server is Courier-IMAP 1.7.0 with an LDAP backend. After creating a shared folder on the server it shows up nicely in Mozilla Mail as subscribeable, but when I try to subscribe it tells me an error occurred on the server. If I either start kmail and access the folder (subscribing in not implemented in kmail, subscribeable folders just show up as normal folders) or turn off "show only subscribed folders" and subscribe to the folder then (once "show only..." has been turned on again) that folder will be un-/subscribeable in Mozilla Mail for that account.
could you try attaching an imap protocol log by following these instructions: http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#imap thx
I have tried to make a log but the file keeps being empty (it gets created)...
could you try with 1.5b - some issues with courier servers have been fixed.
Hi, regarding this issue I tried Mozilla 1.5beta but couldn't get consistently satisfactory behavior. It's worth noting the following: Client OS: MacOS X (10.2.6) IMAP Server: UW-IMAP, running on Slackware 8.1 Mozilla server settings of interest: * "Show only subscribed folders" enabled * "Server supports folders that contain subfolders and messages" disabled I wound up trying a variety of operations on various folders, of both the "messages only" and "folders only" type. I noted whether they appeared in the subscribe dialog list and whether they appeared in the left pane of the main window. Sometimes Mozilla picked up the folder correctly, sometimes Mozilla refused to acknowledge it per bug 185978 (i.e. it doesn't show up on the main window, it doesn't appear on the subscribe dialog so that one may subscribe to it). It's worth noting that I also created the folder by several different means. First, I tried creating the file using an alternate IMAP client talking to the same server (Apple Mail), sometimes I manipulated the folders directly on the server using Unix commands. Note that in all cases, I quit and re-ran Mozilla so that the "before" and "after" views were on distinct, nonoverlapping IMAP sessions. Here's what I found: * create new msg only folder via alt client: OK, appears subscribed * create new msg only folder on server: OK, appears unsubscribed * create new folders only folder via alt client: unacknowledged * create new folders folder on server: unacknowledged * move msg only folder via alt client: OK * move msg only folder on server: if subscribed, remembered in old location until unsubscribed * move folder only folder (no subfolders) via alt client: recognized in new location as message-only folder, becomes unacknowledged when unsubscribed * move folder only folder (no subfolders) on server: unacknowledged It appears that sometimes a folders-only folder gets incorrectly attributed as a messages-only folder, which can't be changed after the folder is created. It is also worth noting that a folder which exists on the server but is unacknowledged and invisible can be made to appear by creating a subfolder within it.
can you try a recent 1.7 build? I fixed a couple problems in this area.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; de-AT; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040616 subscribing to folders works perfectly smooth now with 'show only subscribed folders' enabled thank you
thx, resolving wfm
