Please re-open Bug #1831667 .
I need to see the total message count in the status bar.
Please offer a setting to enable this. (It can be off by default.)

The solution for your need will be as stated in bug 1831667 comment 4 "For that scenario we're implementing a bottom floating tooltip to show those info when a message is selected."
A tooltip is not sufficient.
The information needs be there, without requiring any interaction for it to be shown.
Feel free to leave it disabled by default.

The unread count is already in the folder pane.
The total count is in the message list header, as well as the selected showing up if multiple messages are selected.
I now did View -> Layout -> Message List Header, and the total message count now gets displayed. Thanks!
(I had the message list header hidden in order to have more space for the message list, I think. I'd like to get that space back. Above the message list header there's a whole row of empty space. Perhaps the message list header could be moved up.)

Note that you can have both unread and total counts in the Folder Pane. I do this, as I also didn't want to lose space for the Message List header

Thanks for the info! I'd need that to be shown only for my Inbox folder, not for the others. Is that possible to set? And if so, how? Then I could move the total message count of the inbox to the Inbox folder row -> more space for the message list.
(Apologies for using Bugzilla as discussion forum. If my total count stays in the message list header, that's OK enough.)

No, the total count can be shown for all Folders, or none.
You can control whether the total count, and folder size, are shown via the Folder Pane's three-dot menu in the header.
