User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/118.0

Steps to reproduce:

I'm using Thunderbird 115 with the UI configured in the standard Classic View Layout with “Table” View. The Thunderbird window is sized to half my screen width horizontally. The numbers in parens below refer to the UI element identifiers in the Thunderbird Getting Started doc at https://blog.thunderbird.net/2023/07/getting-started-with-the-main-window-of-thunderbird-115-supernova/. Screenshots of the behavior and the UI picture in the Getting Started doc are attached.

I click on a message in the Message List Pane (7). The message displays in the Message Pane (9) and a series of buttons is displayed above the message in the Message Header Pane (8). If the message is an email the buttons are [Reply] [Forward] [Archive] [Junk] [Delete] [More]. If the message is is from a blog/newsfeed the buttons are [Forward Archive Junk Delete More]. The buttons seem to be right-justified in the pane. If the message has an attachment the attachment link appears in the Attachment Pane at the bottom of the Message Pane. Depending on the length of the attachment link the Message Header Pane Buttons shift out of position and sometimes out of view.

Actual results:

When I scroll through a list of messages with no attachment links, the UI buttons in the Message Header area are all visible and stay fixed in place. If a message has an attachment link AND the length of the link name is too long to allow both the link name and the [Save] button to its right to be displayed in the available horizontal space in the Attachment Pane the UI pushes the Message Header Pane buttons off the right side of the window by the same amount of space as the Attachment Pane text has overflowed from the right side of the pane. E.g. if the length of the attachment link pushes the [SAVE] button 4 characters to the right, out of the visible area, the Message Header buttons also get pushed out of the window by the same amount even though there is plenty of room to the left of the buttons to keep them visible.

Expected results:

The Message Header buttons' positions should stay fixed in place. I believe this could be achieved by making them left-justified rather than right-justified. A text overflow in the Attachment Pane should not cause the buttons in the Message Header Pane to move, they should stay fixed in position so if, for example, I repeatedly hit [Delete] successive messages will be deleted. Current behavior is the [Delete] button can move which sometimes causes my next click to erroneously click on the button shifted into the [Delete] button's place.

I am the reporter of this bug. What info do you need from me?

Does Bug 1858114 match your issue?

Bug 1858114 matches my issue as far as text overflowing the window but it doesn't mention the Message Header Pane buttons shifting as well so I don't know if it's exactly the same issue. I can reproduce the bug 100% of the time when posts are displayed from the New York Times .rss feeds as an example. One example feed link:
https://rss.nytimes.com/services/xml/rss/nyt/World.xml

My environment is X11, xfce4 on Xubuntu 20.04.6 LTS

Attached image Screenshot-NYT-Feed.png

This screenshot shows the issue when accessing the New York Times world news rss feed. Notice that the Website link in the message header pane overflows off the right side of the pane and the control buttons overflow out of the pane as well.

Make sure the window width is narrow enough that a long website link in the message header pane is wider than the window width.

Make sure the window width is narrow enough that a long website link in the message header pane is wider than the window width.

With that condition, yes, I am able to reproduce on 115.5.0 on Windows, and 120.0b6 on Mac.
