Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Thunderbird 115 Supernova on a 1080p monitor display
2. Set TB to 3-column layout via View -> Window Layout -> 3-Column Layout
3. Resize the middle column (Width (A) in the attached TB-1080p.JPG) that lists the e-mails to fit the screen resolution properly, minimizing any unused space without having a vertical scrollbar in the middle column.
4. Move Thunderbird to a new screen or desktop with 4K resolution. Make the Window fit the screen fully.

Actual results:

On the 4K resolution screen, TB incorrectly scales width (A) (cf., TB-4k.JPG), while holding width (B) constant. This results in a lot of (C) blank space. Please see attached TB-4k.JPG and compare it to attached TB-1080p.JPG.

Expected results:

Instead of scaling width (A) on the 4k screen, Thunderbird should have scaled width (B). This would make the message window have more width, which is fine. Instead, it did scale the middle column, resulting in lots of unused blank space (C).

This behavior was introduced with Supernova. It did not exist previously, making it a defect in my opinion.

To clarify: this is a usability and user experience issue, as on the 4k screen approximately 60% of the screen space remains unused (blank space (C)).

Furthermore, scaling the middle column correctly on the 4k screen results in a wrong scaling of the middle column when moving to a 1080p screen. So a vice-versa approach does not resolve this.

It is not feasible to rescale the middle column every day, as I frequently switch between 4k (office) and 1080p (home) displays.
