Changed selection of displayed columns (headers).
Unchecked to suppress display of "Correspondents".
Checked to display "From".
Chose select to all children of folder (top-level folder).
Verified applied to folders.

Actual results:

Closed Thunderbird then re-started.
Original (default) headers were restored. Custom selections were abandoned/purged/ not made persistent as expected.\

Expected results:

Customized settings for displayed column selections should have been persistent, saved as user preference along with other preferences, and re-applied at re-start of Thunderbird.
