Steps to reproduce:

Start thunderbird

Actual results:

No email is selected, email pane is blank

Expected results:

latest email should be selected from the top mailbox(like outlook or apple mail)

Summary: On startup on email is selected/blank pane → On startup the latest email is not selected/blank pane

Was that different in TB 115? To my knowledge, TB doesn't select a message at startup and rather displays the "start page" which can be configured in the settings.

When you disable the "display" start page option, then you just get a blank page
From what I have read this feature was present in the early versions of thunderbird.

Meanwhile 2 extensions were developed for something that any other mail client has by default.
https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/auto-select-latest-message/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/start-with-inbox/

This seems like a feature request or a UX issue, not a defect!

Type: defect → enhancement

Indeed, also note that when you switch from folders to folders this pane is also blank, why not selecting the latest email by default in the list?

Could there be an option to select the last email one was reading before closing TB instead of showing up the latest email?

Summary: On startup the latest email is not selected/blank pane → On startup the last viewed email is not selected : blank pane
