User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.2) Gecko/20021126 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.2) Gecko/20021126 I'm using yahoo mail as my pop3 server. Most times I open mozilla mail, it downloads duplicates of the mail on the server rather than just new mail. I pared down my pop inbox (on server) to 200 messages and it still downloads them all. I also archived all of my local e-mails to a new directory and it filled up the inbox again and is now duplicating. In addition the subject/sender/time in the mailbox will frequently point to the incorrect message body and I have to close and re-open mozilla completely. If mozilla stays open it will only download new messages but if I close it and re-open it will sometimes duplicate... I do have leave messages on server on rather than delete, but that is my pref since yahoo is pop rather than imap Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.open mozilla mail 2.watch it download the entire pop3 mailbox 3.cry (only occasionally).. and more frequently have a beer while it downloads Actual Results: it will download the entirety of the server's mail (my account) Expected Results: only download new messages This makes mozilla mail an unreliable e-mail client, but I don't want to switch.. I've been using netscape mal for years and switched to the MO a year ago when I upgraded from a pentium pro to a duron 1.3

Winston Parker, have you tried a recent version of Mozilla? I attempted to reproduce your results using the 1.3 Final build, with no luck. If you still see this problem, please see the reports for Bug 137861, Bug 193515, and Bug 199519 which have similar complaints. Check to see if their circumstances match yours. In particular, do you have another computer from which you access this account? Look under Edit|Mail&Newsgroup Settings, for your POP account, on the Server Settings page. What do you have set for [] Leave messages on server [] Delete messages on server when they are deleted or moved from Inbox
I've also had this problem. Very annoying. Workaround for me: 1) Delete the account. 2) Set the account up again. 3) Sigh. Found with Moz 1.3. This is obviously not going to be consistently reproducible, but there are enough bugs on this that it should be investigated. Marking as 'new'. Other bugs that might be relevant here: bug 169271, bug 137861, bug 193515, bug 195519.

Thanks for your comments Mike and Brian - I haven't had this problem in the past month and I haven't yet changed to 1.3 - I'm still on Mozilla 1.2 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.2) Gecko/20021126 My mailbox has 1271 new messages because it occasionally downloads duplicates. I am using Yahoo, Roadrunner, and Earthlink as POP servers. My yahoo acct is my primary and gets many more messages (10/day vs. 1/week), but I have not seen this issue at all with e-link/RR. Here are my settings... Look under Edit|Mail&Newsgroup Settings, for your POP account, on the Server Settings page. What do you have set for [X] Leave messages on server [] Delete messages on server when they are deleted or moved from Inbox

I will try some experiments with leaving open MOZ mail and yahoo mail browser windows (and working w/ them) vs. closing yahoo mail browser vs. logging out and closing yahoo mail browser. It seems that Bug 193515 might be related.

Just a note, it happened again to me with another pop3 server (earthlink) so it's not related to yahoo. I do have the same settings on that server (leave messages on server, don't delete off the server when you delete locally).

Since upgrading to Thunderbird 0.4: the machine that I use to merely "view" the inbox but not collect mail is no longer downloading duplicates at any point that I can discern. It would seem the bug is resolved for my case in 0.4. Nice work!

I am having this anoying problem too. My settings are: [x] Leave messages on server [ ] For at most _ days [x] Until I delete them or move them from Inbox It usually happens when an error (timeout, RETR error etc) occurs in the middle of the message download process. So I close Thunderbird, reopen it and it will download all the messages again, repeating the ones that it had already downloaded before the error.

Hi. 20 days later and here I am. I removed that account (all messages and rules were gone) and created a brand new one. Everything worked really fine until today. I left on last wednesday and just got back on monday to get my email. My folders had some 3000 or 4000 msgs (only 15 in the inbox). There were 350 messages on the server (including two quite big attachments) and it started to download them. It downloaded Ok. The day after, it downloaded everything again and gave me a RETR error. I closed Thunderbird and opened it again. It downloaded all my inbox again. But this time it succeded and I hope it does not do it again. This is a very annoying problem, and, IMHO, breaks a bit of Thunderbird's credibility as a stable email client ("Were we really ready for 1.0 launch, Houston?").

dup of bug 9413 or bug 334664? bug 92973 could also use cleanup.

I am encountering two somewhat similar problems. At home, my client redownloads the latest messages that I have left on the server occasionally. I cannot reproduce this reliably. At work, a client is pretending to redownload messages that are NOT on the server, the exact same (including months-old dates) 3 messages every week.

I have the same problem occasionally. From time to time my TB downloads all mails from one of my pop accounts. Problem persist from one of first version of TB to current version 2 beta 2 (20070218). I have approx 12k messages on my POP3 server.

I think I see this mainly after I've quit Thunderbird while it was in the middle of downloading mail. So is it possible some file that tracks downloaded mail is becoming corrupted? In my work situation, I have a lousy network which occasionally allows downloads to just hang indefinitely. In those situations, Norton AV hangs while scanning the incoming message and will sit that way indefinitely if I let it. And if I try to hit "Get Mail" in Thunderbird again, it gives me the "This folder is being processed" message. So the only way to continue receiving mail is to quit Thunderbird and start again. I think it's at this point I'm more likely to see old messages downloaded again.

Bug 240049 seems to be more active.. in that it has a patch, so duping this to that. Note, some of the comments here seem to refer to this happening all the time, but the most recent ones only refer to it happening now and then, so it definitely sounds like bug 240049.
