Reporter: did you make a clean install of your new build ?
I mean : deleting mozilla datas in mozilla folder (except plugins folder) before
updating ?
Did you try removing (in your profile, see releases notes to find it) xul.mfl
file, cache and chrome directory ?

Marcus: Can you try this:
Delete the file compreg.dat (when mozilla is not running)
Then restart. Does it still hang on quit?
If yes: Kill off the mozilla process(es) - then delete XUL.mfl (in your profile
directory. Restart. Any change now?
And of course see comment #1.
-> probably DUPL of bug 187872 or something similar...

DO NOT DO THAT. Just rename it. If that fixes things, we want a zipped up copy
of that file (attached using
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?bugid=188310&action=enter )

Re comment #3:
Boris, sorry, I didn't know that.
But maybe I have such a XUL.mfl file for you?
A friend of mine today had the problem that after opening Mozilla it was
unresponsive for about 20 seconds on a very fast WinXP computer with Mozilla
memory usage constantly rising during that time (to about 45 MB).
But this was happening *after* the splash screen, when the Mozilla window was
already visible.
I used the util Filemon and found that xul.mfl was being accessed all the time.
I think this got worse with each restart of Mozilla (but that might be wrong).
After *renaming* xul.mfl everything worked well again.
This file is about 3.6 MB large now.
It is a new computer, the Mozilla version is 1.2.1 or a nightly from a few days
before (but surely 1.2 branch) and there has never been another Mozilla version
or Netscape on that computer.
If you'd like to see that file, please contact me.

Frederic Bezies,
I deleted all files in the Mozilla directory and copied the new files there.

One more thing, I copied a non-standard splash screen into the Mozilla directory
after installing this verion.

And does it work now ?
When you remove your custom splash screen, does mozilla still freeze ?

Andreas Kunz,
I renamed that file and Mozilla starts, however when I close it, I can't restart
it again.

Frederic Bezies,
No change: Mozilla starts, however when I close it, I can't restart
it again.

That sounds more like bug 144027 (obsolete skin refs in profile chrome),
than bug 169777 (fastload hang).
Try renaming the "chrome" directory in your profile.

Same thing happened to me; Mozilla hangs at startup on splash screen. When I
renamed the XUL.mfl file the problem seems to be fixed.

Closing this bug as duplicate of bug 169777 ?
Comment 14•22 years ago

either bug 144027 or bug 169777 are fixed in 1.3b. Closing out as dup of one of
them.
