(Whiteboard: [addon: Nostalgy++])

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:123.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/123.0

Steps to reproduce:

Since upgrading to TB115 (from 102) the Esc key no longer closes a message. I looked for the option that was there in 102 and prior versions. No longer there.

Actual results:

Pressing the Esc key after opening a message does nothing.

Expected results:

It should have closed the message window. But the option is no longer there. The Esc key is used to close or dismiss a gazillion other things in TB. So why remove that very useful feature?

"Open in new window" followed by ESC still closes that window.

Seems to close it for me (on linux).

Does not on Windows 11 23H2

i am on Surface Boook 2 windows 11 version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.3155). and cannot reproduce this problem. I also cannot reproduce this problem on ubuntu 22.0.4 and macOS Ventura latest. On all 3 operating systems I tried the latest version of Thunderbird 115. So maybe it's Windows 11 23H2 or anti-virus or a TB extension or keyboard macro software. I suggest trying Thunderbird Troubleshoot mode and disabling all extensions and 3rd party software as well, you know the usual debugging process :-)

On Windows 10 esc works for me on two different machines for 102, 115, beta, nightly. Also works on Mac Sonoma.

Summary: Option to close a message with the Esc key no longer exists → Option to close a standalone message window with the Esc key no longer exists

Also check that ctrl+w works.

I tried safe mode (add-ons disabled) and Esc worked. So I restarted in Normal mode and disabled all my add-ons. Esc still worked. Then I re-enabled all my add-ons one at a time, restarting TB each time just for good measure. It turned out that it is the new Nostalgy++ add-on (updated for TB115) that renders Esc ineffective.

What threw me off in the wrong direction is that I could no longer find the option in TB settings to enable/disable closing a message with Esc, so I thought it had been removed. Maybe the option has been removed but it's always enabled?

In any case, I will pursue this on GitHub where Nostalgy++ is discussed. Apologies for the false alarm. This bug can be closed.
Thanks.

We tend to use whiteboard to notate addons. It's a long list https://mzl.la/3Vatdvn

looks like there is some variation between addon and add-on https://mzl.la/3TbQVok
