When I type in the location bar, it should never get overwritten. This used to work, but it has regressed again (Well, I think it broke again, it might be something with data urls). Go to the dataurl above and try to type a url into the location bar. It gets overwritten when the meta tag refreshes the page. Here is the old (closed) bug http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15050

AFAICT, this was never fixed. It was broken in 0.9.9 and the patch from bug 15050 wouldn't have fixed it. The startDocumentLoad handler in browser resets the mechanism that prevents the location from being changed (and tabbed browser helps out too), assuming (I guess) that the page load was initiated by the user.

I'm pretty sure this got fixed in Mozilla because I remember being annoyed by it when I switched to Firefox. Its still the single most annoying feature of the product and seems to be getting more annoying as pages become more complex and take longer to load.

Neil, are you still seeing this issue? If no, please set status to RESOLVED and resolution to WORKSFORME It works for me using current trunk, start a page that's long to load, like http://planet.mozilla.org/ and type in url bar while it's loading. They typing is not impacted
