I see this on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njX2bu-_Vw4. The colors are faded.
When I try the same video in private browsing HDR works.

Brad do you see anything like this?
I don't, but YouTube has a variety of modes that can interfere with WebRender surface promotion -- a requirement for HDR. Could be a problem with overlays, that would be a re-emergence of Bug 1850118, or it could be Dark Mode + Ambient Mode which is Bug 1872892. Could be a new thing.
Try "Theater Mode". If it works in that mode, it's a problem with overlays. If you have Ambient Mode on, turn that off and see if it works. If neither of those fix it, then post screenshots of normal vs private browsing and I'd like to look at the differing video treatments to see what might be affecting surface promotion.

And if it does go away in Theater Mode, implicating the overlay, I'm tracking work to be done on that issue in Bug 1855573.

In theatre mode it flickers a bunch between HDR and non HDR and then eventually settles on HDR.

Now that both Bug 1855573 and Bug 1872892 have landed, is this still happening in your setup?

I think this isn't fixed yet, at least not with Dark Mode and Ambient Mode. That may mean that the patches for Bug 1872892 aren't working and I'll need to re-open that Bug.

I think maybe the patches for Bug 1872892 haven't hit the mozregression builds yet, because I can get correct behavior with my local central build. I'll check again in a day or two.

This does indeed seem better now.
