STR:

• Navigate to a translatable webpage, not in the UI language.
  • e.g., on an English app, navigate to https://www.mozilla.org/fr/
• Press translate from the toolbar
• Change to/from languages
• Observe the list of language names is repeated a few times.
• If the names are not repeated, open close the translations dialog or the dropdowns a few times or wait.
  • Sometimes the first time the dropdown is opened, there are no repeated names.

Observed in Firefox Desktop Release for MacOS v125.0.3. Not observed in Nightly 127.0a1 (2024-04-26) or 127.0a1 (2024-04-29).

Set as 125 affected and 127 unaffected for now. (Did not research how the drop-downs are impacted by release v. nightly language model releases.)

This is my fault :(

This was regressed by push | Bug 1889697 | D206703, which was uplifted into Firefox 125 beta.

This was fixed just two days later by push | Bug 1870316 | D204975 but was not uplifted into Firefox 125 beta.

I'm sorry that I didn't see this bug report sooner. Something like this would have been worth uplifting into release, I think.

The good news is, I've confirmed that it is fixed in 126, which was released today.

As such, I'm going to close this bug as WONTFIX with 125 affected because it's too late to change 125.

For code archaeology purposes, I caused a series of regressions related to the initialization caching for the dropdown menus of both the FullPageTranslationsPanel and SelectTranslationsPanel as I refactored them to use the same code. Some of that chain of events is explained in comment 5 of Bug 189377.

At this time, I do believe that all of the issues regarding initializing the dropdowns for both panels have been sorted, but Firefox 125 will persist with this issue.
