Steps to reproduce:

I'm on 127.0b5 but I had this issue for a while now.
It it a bit hard to describe, but some emails get corrupted, so another, random, old email is displayed instead.
I can not reproduce it at will, I could not observe any similiarities. It happens with different accounts, at different vendors.
The only thing they have in common, is that the original email is not retrievable, however when I log in at the webmailer the true email is there and readable, so there is no direct data loss, as far I can see.

Displaying the source (cmd + U) shows the wrong email, too.
But it will not have any headers. Also in the UI no headers are shown, so sender, title, and recipient are all missing. (So replying does not work either)
See screenshot.
I'm in vertical layout mode, but switching that has no impact on the issue at hand.

Windows 11, Thunderbird v115.10.1 (64-bit)

I've also been experiencing this for an indeterminate amount of time.

I have lots of emails (2000+) sorted into non-local folders (30+). Occasionally when I go to a folder & click on an email the wrong email is displayed. The subject, correspondents, etc is all correct in the list. Usually (if not always) it's the full source code of another email in the same folder. Regarding the same folder part, I'm not certain this is true 100% of the time.

This can occur both for emails sent from & to myself as well as emails from other senders. It has never happened to me in the primary inbox, it only happens with emails in non-local folders.

I've confirmed via webmail that there is no actual data loss or issue with the emails themselves, so this is definitively something Thunderbird does locally. When this happens, the correct email is no longer anywhere to be found in Thunderbird as if the body has been completely overwritten.

Unfortunately I also don't know of any deterministic way to reproduce this. I could give a ballpark estimation of this maybe occurring to 0.25 - 0.5% of emails in folders. I've not been able to observe any distinguishing element that might cause this, it seems to be completely random as far as I can tell.

The only previous action taken prior to encountering this issue is to right click on a message in the inbox and then move it to a non-local folder. Later when viewing the folder, the issue may appear.

As another bit of data I should also add that deleting the email via Thunderbird deletes the correct email.

What @quadronom mentions about the headers missing (and therefore the subject, etc) also happens to me in the email display pane and when it is opened in a separate tab. So it appears that wherever Thunderbird pulls information from for the index / email list is not the same as when you click on the subject of an email to display it. Perhaps the problem lies somewhere around there.

quadronom,

Have you had trouble since your posting in bug 1890230 a month ago?
And if you have, does 128.3.3 or newer solve it for you?

Flags: needinfo?(quadronom)

I had it a couple of times, but since the fixes landed I haven't had an issue so far.
That in itself does not mean much; it was very infrequent (some mailboxes seem to be more errorprone than other tho) anyway and the fix is not that old yet.
I'll observe it and report back if the fix for #1890230 does not help here.
