New Tab Weather Widget often shows out-of-date weather information (e.g. in a new-tab that's been allowed to sit unused for a while)

Guess at STR: [EDIT: these are probably wrong, see comment 2]

  1. Start Firefox Nightly with a fresh profile, and then quit.
  2. Wait for the weather to change (e.g. for the temperature to get warmer outside)
  3. Start Firefox Nightly with that same profile from step 1. (Hopefully this gives you a window with about:newtab.)
  4. Open another new tab (or new window) and compare the weather shown on the second one to the first one.
    ~
    ACTUAL RESULTS:
The weather forecasts disagree between the two new-tabs. See attached screencast that I just captured, where the first tab says it's 60 F and cloudy, while the second says it's 77F and sunny.

In other words: The weather shown on your first new-tab (the one that Firefox opens immediately at startup) seems to be out-of-date, and it doesn't update (or at least, not fast enough for me to have noticed it update)

EXPECTED RESULTS:
Consistent weather reports among my new tabs (none of them being substantially out of date).

Summary: New Tab Weather Widget often shows out-of-date weather information in the first new-tab at startup → New Tab Weather Widget often shows out-of-date weather information in the first new-tab at startup (while subsequent new-tabs are up-to-date)

I'm using Firefox 129.0a1 (2024-06-11) on Ubuntu 22.04. (I would bet this isn't platform-specific though.)

Sorry -- in comment 0, I was sort of reverse-engineering what-the-STR-might-be after tripping over the bug, but I just tested those steps explicitly (allowing time to pass & the temperature to change) and found that my comment 0 STR don't reproduce the issue; the first newtab at startup does seem to have correct/up-to-date weather information (yay!)

So really, I think the actual STR to trigger the issue here might be as follows:

  1. Open a new tab ("Tab A")
  2. Wait for the temperature/weather to change outside.
  3. Open another new tab ("Tab B") or new window.
  4. Compare the weather reports shown in the two tabs.

ACTUAL RESULTS:
Tab A and Tab B disagree about the weather report. Tab A seems to show out-of-date weather information; it seems to not be dynamically updated, I think? This feels broken since the new-tabs otherwise look identical, and the widget looks superficially like a ~real-time weather widget.

EXPECTED RESULTS:
Weather widget should probably dynamically update, so that we show consistent & reasonably-correct weather info between our new-tabs (aside from small differences from weather updates being not-entirely-synchronozed between the tabs).

Summary: New Tab Weather Widget often shows out-of-date weather information in the first new-tab at startup (while subsequent new-tabs are up-to-date) → New Tab Weather Widget often shows out-of-date weather information (e.g. in a new-tab that's been allowed to sit unused for a while)
