RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 509316

People

(Reporter: el, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:129.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/129.0

Steps to reproduce:

Sending format "Only Plain Text" should switch off HTML editor when picked by the user in the menu bar of a compose window. The problem with the HTML editor for plain text mails is that in terms of line breaks it sometimes translates poorly to how Thunderbird sends the e-mail when converted to plain text, so just picking "Only Plain Text" but staying in the HTML editor often leads to broken results. In my personal opinion exact line breaks are important for keeping mails legible, so I feel like this significantly affects the ability to craft readable e-mails.

To reproduce, 1. turn off "Compose Messages in HTML Format" in your account settings, 2. you'll notice that this only seems to affect e-mails created from scratch and not replies to HTML e-mails. While that in itself may make sense, there's regrettably no "Compose replies in plain text only" account setting, so instead 3. you'll need to change "Options" > "Sending Format" > "Only Plain Text" in a compose window. 4. Observe what sort of editor UI you get in terms of formatting and line break behavior.

Actual results:

I keep seeing and using the HTML editor despite now editing what will be effectively a plain text e-mail. This is undesirable for above reasons.

Expected results:

It switches me over to the plain text editor while retaining what I already typed.

This belongs into the same category like bug 140800, or bug 470062. There isn't a need for another bug since this has been discussed before.

For what it's worth, I don't see why a separate switch inside the compose window is needed. It should just switch over when the sending format is changed, like described in bug 470062. Alternatively or additionally, there should probably be a setting inside the account settings that's a sub-setting to "Compose Messages in HTML Format" named "Disallow Replies From Using HTML Format".

Sending format "Only Plain Text" should switch off HTML editor when picked by the user in the menu bar of a compose window.

This is more specifically bug 509316: Switching/toggling Delivery Format from HTML to plaintext does not change composition editor to default plain-text behaviors (expected: fixed text wrap/linebreak, fixed/monospaced font)

there's regrettably no "Compose replies in plain text only" account setting, so instead 3. you'll need to change "Options" > "Sending Format" > "Only Plain Text" in a compose window ...

... or you could shift-click the reply toolbar button to reply in plain text mode.
(This doesn't invalidate your bug. I'm just mentioning it in case you didn't know and in case it helps for your workflow.)

I usually write my e-mails on touch devices with no mouse available. I assume the shift workaround isn't available on there. Sounds like an interesting detail, though!

@Ellie: No mouse is not a problem. No keyboard might be. Have you tried holding SHIFT on the virtual keyboard while touch-clicking on the reply button?
