Steps to reproduce:
MDN:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Window/showDirectoryPicker
Specification:
https://wicg.github.io/file-system-access/#api-showdirectorypicker
Examples:
https://developer.chrome.com/docs/capabilities/web-apis/file-system-access

I'm building automatic backup feature to the "user specified directory" (for example Drive/Dropbox/Mega), for one of my extensions.
This feature would be also useful for various web-app editors.

Thanks Gregory for the link!
I see now I may have kicked a hornets nest :), I didn't realized this is actually the "File System Access API" request.
In any case, it's been 5 years since that thread started (and 3 since it ended), so I'm sure sure the proposed API/specs is more matured now, and threat vectors identified.
And extra sensitive use cases could be further restricted/warned. There are super smart people here after all.
For example, allow selecting only empty directories. This may already cover most cases since many apps just want to manage their own data on users drive, but unlike "Origin private file system", accessible also by user.

As discussed in the webcompat meeting, we set the keyword webcompat:blocked for the time being due to our standards-position.

I’m not going to file a new bug, but I’ll add a use case for reference: My Sveltia CMS is a leading Git-based headless CMS with local repository support that utilizes the File System Access API. It’s probably the first CMS in the industry to implement the API. Some people have asked me about Firefox support, so there is a need for it. As a former Mozillian, I’d definitely like to see it.
