Seems to be a user agent check on /. If you're using a Firefox UA you get a 302 to /unsupported. If you set a Chrome UA you can get to the app, and also, as the user agent check seems to only apply to /, if you access https://beta.maps.apple.com/xyz, even with a Firefox UA, the application will load.

The page at https://support.apple.com/en-us/120585 claims that

Maps on the web will be available for additional browsers, platforms, and languages soon.

but of course "soon" could mean anything. I poked an Apple contact, but I don't expect any commitments to anything... because it's Apple. :(

On Android may not enough change user agent, these add-ons fails: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/uaswitcher/

At this point no mobile phone browsers are supported, not even Safari for iOS.

so as Kagami said:
Safari on iPhone is also not yet supported on the beta.

If you bypass with a UA string override and detect any bugs which should not be because the feature is already supported on Firefox, please let me know. I'm happy to route any bugs inside Apple.
If there is a bug in Firefox such as Bug 1909933, feel free to cc me on the bug.

Thanks Karl, webcompat united! 🙌

Apple Maps now supports Firefox, happily closing. 👍
