User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:132.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/132.0
Steps to reproduce:
- Installed a recent Nightly update
- Re-launched Nightly
Actual results:
Bookmarks Toolbar items do not appear at the top of the window.
There is a blank line where the bookmarks should appear, but not items.
Expected results:
The hierarchy of items in my 'Bookmarks > Manage Booksmarks > Bookmarks Toolbar' should appear at the top of the window when 'View > Toolbars > Bookmarks > Always Show' is enabled.

Forgot to mention that my Bookmarks Toolbar items are select-able and usable from the Manage Bookmarks window as expected; so that is a functional workaround.

I can't reproduce on the latest nightly (20240920090503), the bookmarks toolbar is displayed as usual.
Do you have any CSS customization, non-standard theme? Does it happen in troubleshot mode?

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

No customer CSS or non-standard themes in use. YES, the problem still occurs in trouble shoot mode.
I've thought about totally wiping my Profile/ or the entire '/Application Support/Firefox/' hierarchy and starting from scratch, but I'm trying to stay in investigative mode to find out what could be triggering this.

The same bookmarks html imported into the public Firefox 130.0.1 (64-bit) appear as expected in the Booksmarks Toolbar.
of course, the public build is using a different Profile/ so all that proves is the bookmarks html structure saved on disk is valid and imports OK into a new app instance.

Please check whether there is a Bookmark toolbar items
in placeholder of bookmark toolbar in Customize toolbar tab(Menu > More tools... > Customize toolbar....).
If no, Drag drop Bookmarks toolbar items
onto the placeholder. Then clock Done
.

thanks Alice.
I checked 'View > Toolbar > Customize Toolbar' and the 'Bookmarks toolbar items' is NOT sitting up in the dotted active placeholder.
I suspect making this change in 'Customize Toolbar' will fix the problem I've experienced. I haven't gone into 'Customize Toolbar' in years, so this wasn't a recent end-user change that triggered this. Before I drag 'Bookmarks toolbar items' up into the placeholder rectangle, is there anything else on disk (in my config) that you want me to check first?

browser.uiCustomization.state
in prefs.js in the user profile folder is the toolbar customization status, but it may have gone wrong for some reason.
It's better to wait for the developer's opinion on the possibility of such a breakage.

I regressed back through Nightly builds to see which one might have disabled the 'Bookmarks toolbar item', but the 'personal-bookmarks' had already been removed from 'browser.uiCustomization.state' in prefs.js so it was no surprise that they were missing from at the top of the window when running back through older builds.
Manually adding 'Bookmarks toolbar item' back to the toolbar rectangle in 'View > Toolbars > Customize Toolbar' corrected the problem for me. Nightly is now showing my 'Bookmarks Toolbar' items at the top of browser windows when 'View > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar > Always Show' is enabled.
After adding back the 'Bookmarks toolbar item' and then regressed back through Nightly builds over the past two weeks (oldest to newest) and did not get the problem to re-occur. I'm unfortunately not sure what originally triggered the 'Bookmarks toolbar item' disappearance.

Thanks very much for going to such great lengths to try to help us figure out the bug here. It seems like you've solved this for yourself using the Customize menu and the bug hasn't returned. As such, I'm going to close this, but if the bug pops up again, please reopen this bug and we'll get back to debugging.
