passwords now requested serially, next one only after response from server - slow when using multiple accounts.

Steps to reproduce:
On opening TB (and using multiple incoming email addresses, each of which is checked at startup), it asks for the first email password. If entered, TB now delays asking for the next email's password until it's downloaded all email for the first one. If cancelled, it waits for as much as a minute before asking for the next password.
Actual results:
That's kind of described above: The latest version of TB waits for a signal from the email server (either after downloading all messages or something to do with cancelling) before letting me enter the next email password. I have several emails, all checked at startup. This new process is frustrating and time-consuming.
Expected results:
A couple versions ago (I wasn't keeping track of the version number, but it was two major updates ago), TB handled this much better--it asked for all the email passwords one after the other, regardless of whether it had finished processing the previous entries. This was great!
The last version changed this so all the password windows showed up at once, and I had to re-click in each before I could enter the password. Still, though, this worked in a timely fashion. (I didn't love it, but it was usable.)
Now, however, this is sluggish and frustrating and unwieldy.

[You know, you can save passwords and not have to enter them each time, no?]

It's serial since bug 1847137.
I think this is working as intended. See comment 1.
First, yes, I know I could just have it remember passwords. I don't want to do that.
"Working as intended" seems strange, as having to wait random amounts of time (as much as a minute if I cancel one of the password entries) between entries is frustrating and awkward. I end up moving on to something else and then get interrupted by Thunderbird. Even now it keeps interrupting me writing this.
This all worked fine for me a couple of versions ago. Is there not a way to have it wait a set amount of time between entries, not bound by waiting for incoming mail or the server to respond about the password?

Sorry, it is not possible
