with two main windows open i can close 1 of the 2 without the other one disappearing

Actual results:
sometimes i find that 2 identical incoming messages are open (and listed in the window menu).
i can close 1 of the 2 without the other one disappearing
Expected results:
only 1 incoming messages window should appear

It's possible to have two 3pane windows open yes. Closing one shouldn't close the other one, this is working as it should.
if i may: which is the intent of allowing more than one 3pane window?

Looking at different things in the different windows.
(I agree for most use it's not that useful.)
understood.
but as it happens to me unintentionally (i 'find' that i have a second pane open)
i wonder which is the way to intentionally open this second 3pane window?
