<i/> and <b/> should be effectively ignored, but result in italicised and
bold text respectively.

Browse the URL above.
I am using XSLT to generate XHTML, and the <i/> tags are obviously easily gotten
rid of. I noticed the problem in Netscape, and it is the same in Mozilla 1.0.2 -

Sorry, you send this file as text/html, which means "render
as HTML". Mozilla could not parse it as XML for the reasons listed at
http://www.hixie.ch/advocacy/xhtml.
I think it is same as bug 190780 (<a /> don't treated as closed tag in XHTML
send as text/html).

I think you're right - the same document but as p1.xml, renders fine
(see http://analogplusplus.jessen.ch/p1.xml)
