I've heard some confusion about the feature when talking to people about "Copy without site tracking" feature. Opening this bug to keep track on it. Writing my notes down here:
- We don't remove trackers from the destination site with this feature. The destination site can still run tracking scripts. [1]
- One possible interpretation about "Copy without site tracking" is that websites can tell when a user clicks "Copy" and the "without site tracking" means that we don't notify the website about the copy event. This is not true.
- We also strip query parameters that don't directly track users. Changing the name would allow us to do more of these, without implying that the removed parts of the URL were "site tracking". It would make the feature more general.
- We might not remove all query parameters that are related to site tracking. And we won't ever be able to do so.
- It might also disincentivizes websites from breaking the feature, due to the anti-tracking part of the feature just being a side product.
- The string is shorter, therefore the context menu in the awesome bar stays shorter.
I think "Copy Trimmed Link" conveys the feature more concisely.
I know that there is a cost with renaming features: Docs need to be updated, users need to learn about the "new feature". This bug is for evaluating changing the name.

Points for keeping the name:
- cost of renaming (as mentioned above)
- sets focus on anti-tracking -> increases felt-privacy
Another point for renaming, that might change in the future:
- Sets expectation of (trivial) debouncing, that we currently don't do.

My notes until now from talking to content design team:
- Generally reco to go with the name
- l10n had some concerns about how trimmed would localize. They felt like it could potentially be confused with a link shortener.
- Plan to do user research on how users perceive the name: Copy Trimmed Link User Testing Plan

Updates from Content Design:
[R]an user testing and copy trimmed link didn't do well, no one correctly identified it and after they heard the definition no one thought that made sense. Copy without site tracking did better, but I am running a test right now with Copy clean link. I'll let you know when it finishes.
My reco is "Copy clean link" for the updated terminology. I am still running a user test in German but I don't think we should wait for it to fill. L10N recommended adding a localization comment to help localizers understand it [...].

I agree that “Copy Clean Link” makes sense as the new label for this feature as it captures this is intended to "clean up" "links" so user expectations should be limited to this.

Release Note Request (optional, but appreciated)
[Why is this notable]: User facing change.
[Affects Firefox for Android]: No
[Suggested wording]: "Copy Without Site Tracking" was renamed to "Copy Clean Link" after noticing some confusion around expectations of what the feature does and doing user research on how well each term communicates the action. "Copy Clean Link" is a list based approach to remove known tracking parameters from links.
[Links (documentation, blog post, etc)]: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enhanced-tracking-protection-firefox-desktop#w_copy-without-site-tracking (Note that the link likely changes after Bug 1933944 resolves).
