Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:133.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/133.0

Steps to reproduce:

Tb 128.5.2esr (64-bit) on Kubuntu 24.04

  • clicked on Home-folder Trash
  • clicked 'Compact'
  • no message
  • clicked on 'Local Folders Trash'
  • clicked 'Compact'
  • message "The folder 'Trash on Local Folders' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again."

Identical with 'Right click > Compact'

Actual results:

  • message "The folder 'Trash on Local Folders' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again."

Expected results:

No message or 'Done'. for 'Local Folders Trash'

Apologies for not mentioning that in both cases the Trash folder in Tb was empty prior to clicking 'Compact'.

Created new folder on user level : no message on clicking the 'Compact' button
Created new folder on Local Folders : no message on clicking the 'Compact' button

Thunderbird sits on an almost empty 2Tb HD.
In Tb. both Trash-folders are empty
So I took a look at the Trash-files on disk.
Trash.msf on root is 2.3 Kb
Trash.msf on Local Folders is 2.2 Mb and contains messages dating past 10 years.
Emptying Trash on Local Folders once more did not result in a reduced size of Trash.msf.
But now right clicking the Trash folder on Local Folders and selecting Compact no longer results in the error message. While right clicking the Trash folder on root and selecting Compact results in the error message.

It would seem to me that the solution for #1935331 also affects bug #1935124?
Since it could result in dataloss of Trash.msf on Local Folders (2.2 Mb, containing messages dating past 10 years)
In my case the folder does have accessible data, simply using Kate.
