Is it working in Thunderbird v128?
Do you get a more detailed message in the Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J)

Even when I added Gmail, this problem did not occur in Thunderbird version 128 JPN.
Do you get a more detailed message in the Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J)
This problem did not occur in Thunderbird Ver128, so I did not use the Error Console. There was no particular display on the screen.
Thank you.

Do you see this?
Give me a few more days. I use ESR version on my main PC.
I think I will install a Japanese version of 136 on a note PC and see how it behaves.

I started Thunderbird 136.0.1 with the new profile and began setting up my Gmail account.
The setup went smoothly. I was presented with the usual two-factor authentication window, and after successful authentication, I gave Thunderbird permission to access my Gmail and it began downloading my emails.

Rei Narumiya, what OS are you using?
Any special file system settings?

Could you please check the Error Console during setup with v136.0.1 instead of v128?
Make sure you set "mail.setup.loglevel" to "All" when doing so.
I saw "画像1.png", it looks to me like the situation after the server settings are found and you click the "完了" button.
Normally, the Gmail two-step verification process window would appear immediately, but an error seems to have occurred before that and stopped it.
And then, the following error message appears:
Component returned failure code: 0x80004005
(NS_ERROR_FAILURE)
[nsIMsgAccountManager.createIncomingServer]

I'm sorry, I misunderstood the meaning of the words and gave a strange reply.
I agree to the answer that other people have made.

I talked to the reporter, and here's the summary:
- At the time of reporting, about 20 attempts had been made to set up a Gmail account with Thunderbird (136.0 JPN), all of which had failed.
- But now when the reporter does the same it always works and there are no issues.
- So there is no Error Console log.
- The antivirus software used was the standard Microsoft Defender.
The error message indicates that nsIMsgAccountManager.createIncomingServer returned NS_ERROR_FAILURE, what could have happened in this case?

Magnus, is it possible to artificially create a situation where nsIMsgAccountManager.createIncomingServer returns NS_ERROR_FAILURE?

You can try setting the hostname pref for the server to empty (in the prefs)
Do back up your profile before fiddling with that though.

The NS_ERROR_FAILURE should have occurred during the setup of your Gmail account.
At this point, I believe the server settings haven't been saved to prefs.js yet, they only exist in memory.
The image of the setup screen provided by the reporter shows no signs of manual setup.
Even if the reporter performs manual setup, the setup cannot proceed if the hostname is empty.
Is it possible that the settings during setup are saved in a temporary file and that these are being referenced when creating an account?

"your Gmail account" in the above sentence is a typo.

No idea what happened. But since this is the only report about this, and it also started working for the original reporter, I don't think there's much we can do here.
